49ers women knock off Hokies

-- The 49ers women's team upped its record to 3-0 Wednesday with a 71-65 victory against the ACC's Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.

Guard Epiphany Woodson and forward Jai Forney both scored 21 for the 49ers. It was a career high for Woodson.

"It was not a great first 30 minutes by our team," said coach Cara Consuegra. "But ... we started sharing the ball. Epiphany played great down the stretch."

Consuegra also said that Forney's biggest contribution was the defense she played on Virginia Tech's Monet Tellier.

The 49ers play again Saturday against Elon at Halton Arena.

-- Charlotte's baseball team signed six players this week: Infielder Matt Creech (Colquitt, Ga., County); catcher Nick Daddio (Hough); left-hand pitcher Sean Geoghegan (Southwest Guilford); left-hand pitcher Jason Harris (Barton, Kan., Community College); right-hand pitcher Adam Huffman (Western Alamance); infielder Kory Shumate (Greensboro Grimsley).

Great job by Coach Hibbs getting another talented group of future Niners!

Good Job Brett Hall and Rochelle. Keep up the good work. What is the pitching coaches name? It always slips my mind. GO niners!!

That's sad, the main point of the article was the lady niners defeating ACC foe VT on the road, and yet the small blurb about the baseball signings gets the first two posts.

Congrats Lady Niners on a good non-conference win!

I was at the basketball game. The Niners did not play their best overall, but good enough to edge out a not very good VT group. The sweetest part was holding Monet Tellier, who turned down a scholarship offer from Charlotte, to well below her average and having her foul out in frustration. The Lady Niners are entertaining and well coached.
Oh, yea, congratulations also to baseball.

If these morons are going to fraudulently continue to call the team by the city and not by its propert university name then do the same for all the teams too.

Blacksburg was beaten by Charlotte.

(Va Tech was beaten by UNCC)

Congratulations to the Niners ladies basketball and baseball! Both have enjoyed continued success in recent years and have become nationally respected programs.

BTW,
I do not understand why so many in this city consistently post negative remarks about this university and it's athletics program. It is apparent that many of our residents have zero pride in their city or any institution that adds so much to it. For the Record, Anon. 6:26 is the moron. This was not even UNCC vs. Virginia Tech. The universities are officially known as "Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University" and "The University of North Carolina at Charlotte". However, both universities officially call their athletic teams "Virginia Tech Hokies" and the "Charlotte 49ers" There is a difference between the academic institutions (VPISU & UNCC) and their athletic programs. It is not wise to call someone a moron unless you know what you are talking about yourself.

Racking your brain for a gift for a sports fan? Why not 49ers tickets? Tickets make for great gifts that won’t break the bank!
