Observations from UTSA

SAN ANTONIO -- Observations from Charlotte's 85-77 loss to UTSA on Saturday:

-- The loss was mystifying on a few levels: The 49ers were in position to go 2-0 on the road to open their Conference USA schedule, and had seemed to have passed a tougher assignment Thursday at UTEP. But for whatever reason -- blame it on the coaches (as Alan Major did) or the players (as Ben Cherry did) -- the 49ers weren't ready to play against a UTSA team that was 4-9 in the nonconference and had lost to a Division III team in November.

-- The 49es continue to be erratic on offense and their defensive effort comes and goes. Charlotte began Saturday's game going inside to 6-11 Mike Thorne, who had four shots (making one) in the first 3 minutes. But the 49ers then seemed to forget about Thorne, who finished with just 6 points after scoring against UTEP. UTSA's guards, especially Devon Agusi, were too quick for Charlotte and got to the rim time and again.

-- Charlotte has cut its turnovers down this season, averaging 14.0 per game (it averaged 15.3 last season). But the 49ers had 12, many on sloppy passes, in the first half, a major reason why they were down by 10 at the half.

--  Shawn Lester must have had quite an outburst at coaches at the end of the half. Lester didn't play in the second half because of it. Major said it wasn't a big problem, but it must have been to bench the team's leading scorer when his offense was sorely needed.

Players have absolutely no respect for coaches, and with good reason. I guess the athletic department just turns a blind eye.

Oh well. I hope we learn from this one. People just dont realize how good UTEP really is. On to next season!

GO NINERS!!!!!

Peoples expectations are just too high! We are a young team! Majors has already gone above the ADs expectations in Pureto Rico and should be celebrated for that!. Alot of other teams including many of the ACC teams would like to trade places with us. We have a bright future ahead with this team and Coach Alan! Go Niners!

I applaud Alan for benching Lester. Can't have any more cancers on this team! Not only are we making better players but better people as well! I hope Shawn learns a lesson from this.

Agree with 11:48. Lester has had a problem with immaturity before the season even started.

If he can't learn his lesson after riding the bench for a half then boot his stupid ass.

Maybe Major can bench himself for poor coaching since he takes responsibility for not having the team ready.
How is this investment so far, 49ers. Pay Lutz close to $940,000 to walk away and Major close to $1.5 million in his 4th year. Who is responsible for that mess of $2.45 million for a .500 record? Plus the fee we paid to exit A-10 and join this awful freaking league?

Five more years!

Coach brought said player here. It's not lie Lester is new, he was here all last season.

331 loss isn't having too high expectation. Idiotic statement above. Unless your self esteem is that low...

From the San Antonio newspaper: "SAN ANTONIO — In three recent performances, UTSA lost by a combined 90 points leading into their first weekend of Conference USA competition.

They gave up unsightly totals of 90, 99 and 104 points. But just when a season seemed to be spiraling out of control, the Roadrunners got busy."

What does that say about the 49ers? Better question: What dos it say about this putrid league?

I agree with 11:14. 10-5 is about where I expected us to be at this point in the season. We will still have a 20 win season and...
ANOTHER BANNER YEAR!

8:19am - Lester's 12.8ppg will be just as easy to replace as DeMario's 11.7ppg, Briscoe's 12.5ppg, Derrio's 13.0ppg, or Shamari's 17.0ppg.

In fact, it might even be easier to replace Lester's scoring. He puts up low-percentage shots and shoots a lot of them. He won't be missed.

I'm tired of one sorry season after another and yes last year was a sorry year. I personally hope we lose every game for the remainder of the season. A coaching change is needed or this program will continue to wallow in mediocrity.
