2 Pioneer League games
2 Big South games

No one in the SoCon wants to play?

Huh Appys? Don't want to play?

GO NINERS!

By that time there is a good chance App could be in Conference USA. Also, the quality of teams UNCC is playing is exactly why App will not play them...

I don't think you will see any bigger names on our schedule until year 3 when we have a conference. Also, it would be beyond stupid for App to go to Conference USA. The travel budget alone would drain resources they could use for other things. App should just sit tight for the next conference mixup. App, Charlotte, ECU, JMU, ODU, Georgia St, Delware, and a few others would produce instant rivlaries and provide a geographic interest. How many people would care about App playing Rice and SMU?

This is great! I am from Shelby and grew up going to Gardner-Webb games, and now I am a student at UNC Charlotte. Both of these schools mean a lot to me, and I am very excited about this game.

If App moves up to FBS they'll do some time in the SunBelt before CUSA looks at them. App has no measurable TV market, nearest jet capable airport is 50 miles away, The city of Boone struggles with 30,000 people and would need a major infrastructure upgrade to handle larger crowds and every school in CUSA awards doctorate degress. App can get there, but its 20 years off.

Let's start shooting for some Southern Conference games and build some Southern/Big South synergy in both football and basketball. Imagine playing Davidson, App, Furman, Wofford and Gardner Webb every year in football. Even better, get JC Smith to move up to D-1 to create more intra city rivalry. do the same with basketball adding Winthrop to the mix and we could create a 'Charlotte Big 5' (Charlotte, Davidson, GWU, JCSU, Winthrop). Top top it all off set up a our first FBS game with Wake Forest or South Carolina, both just 90 minutes away.

LOL App in CUSA by then? RIGHT! Now don't get me wrong App has some great football but to make that conference change all their other sports and facilities would have to be up to par and I doubt they have the time or the money to make those adjusts before we take the field. In addition to that FBN was right there are a few other pieces that App is missing. Best case scenario for App is to hold tight until Charlotte and a few other schools are ready and form an east coast version of the WAC.

This is like watching High School Football in High School Football stadiums...

From day 1 Charlotte's stadium will be one of the nicest in the FCS. After it is expanded it will be nicer than all of the other FCS stadiums in the state, and some of the FBS stadiums. Gardner Webb runs a fairly successful football program for a small private Christian school, and Charlotte has never played a game so no one knows what level they will be playing on. I imagine we will be an allstar team of local high schoolers who were passed over by BCS programs. We could build a fairly successful FCS program with this ideology.

11:53.....you must be crazy. Charlotte is WAYYYYYY beyond all of those schools in everything except football and will be in that before long. I don't think a school that has been in leagues with the likes of Louisville, Cincy, Marquette, Temple, Xavier, etc. will get excited about joining uo with Winthrop, Davidson, JCSU, etc.

You UNC Charlotte fans are crazy. You think your start-up football team will be in the FBS within the first three years of existence. And yes, there IS a good chance ASU will be in the FBS by then. They are doing a one year study to see if this is feasible. And I don't think Boone is much different than Huntington, WV where Marshall resides. To think that a program like ASU needs to wait until the great UNC Charlotte football team is ready to move up is ridiculous.

The feasibility study will come back with the same results the last 2 App commissioned had. Boone can't handle FBS and the only conference that will want you in FBS is the Sun Belt. Is Sun Belt football worth moving up for? If you were in an actual city or even remotely near an actual city or interstate you might have an outside chance at an FBS conference looking at you. CUSA has no room at the inn for anyone right now and just because you’re good at FCS level football doesn't make FBS a good idea. Look at Marshall. Not trying to be down on App but there's a lot of disadvantages outside of football for App that have to be fixed first. I suggest that the next step up for App would be joining a better FCS conference, like the CAA.

Let the Big South Conference consist of Charlotte, Appalachian St, Western Carolina, Chattanooga, Coastal Carolina, Citadel, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Kennesaw & Liberty in Football. For basketball add North Florida, College of Charleston, UNC-Wilmington, UNC-Greensboro, East Tennessee, & Radford.

Let the remaining Southern Conference schools and Big South Schools merge to reform the Southern Conference.

You people of the South don't know what you are doing…Besides, where are your men and appliances of war to contend against them? The North can make a steam engine, locomotive, or railway car; hardly a yard of cloth or pair of shoes can you make. You are rushing into war with one of the most powerful, ingeniously mechanical, and determined people on Earth—right at your doors. You are bound to fail.

49RFBN, maybe I would give credence to what you say, except for the fact that all you Charlotte football fans think your brand new team will make the jump to FBS after one or two seasons slumming in the FCS. Do you think this will happen because UNC Charlotte just happens to be in a "world class" city? Please. And for the record, I don't want ASU to move up to the FBS. Maybe Charlotte should just be happy they will be in a Division I league, even if it is I-AA.

Dear North…..When making a train we might be weak…But since things are outsourced….. Trains arrive on a slow moving fleet. So stop living in your past…You no longer produce anything that last…Take a look at the top twenty-five…..And you’ll notice that football up north has taken a dive

anon 10:16, that was awesome.
Football up North can't compare to that in the South. The best Big 10 schools can't handle mediocre SEC teams.

We'll see how it all goes for both programs. I just just don't think Sun Belt football is worth it for App, who has drawn a great amount of pride from their FCS level accomplishments. In many ways it would be easier for a school with less success at FCS to move to FBS. You wouldn't be giving up much if you had little success at that level to begin with.

To the cowardly anonymous posters that hate all things UNC Charlotte - no true Niner has any delusions about going to FBS before 2025 at the absolute earliest. Personally, I like to look at my brother's alma mater, UAB, on how to get to FBS. They actually started in Division III in 1991. Three years later they moved to what is now FCS, and 3-4 years later (can't remember exactly when) they moved to FBS. Along the way, they funded their program with 2-3 games every year against teams like Nebraska, Kansas, Tennessee and the like, where you can get $400k for going to their house and taking a 63-7 beating.

UNC Charlotte is going to take longer, because the economy is much worse than when UAB started and it's going to take some time to build up a fan base (there's a minimum attendance requirement you must meet before you can move from FCS to FBS) and make sure the program is on solid financial footing.

As for the schedule, it's exciting to see it slowly being filled out. I would like to see a SoCon team or two, but I'd really like to see some Colonial Athletic Association teams on there, and hopefully we join that conference eventually. And of course, we need a couple games against thos monster FBS teams to get some nice paychecks.

Sorry J.....but Charlotte will NOT wait that long to move to FBS. I can always tell people that haven't done their homework on why Charlotte is doing this at all. It has been made CLEAR for years now that Charlotte is starting football for one MAIN reason and that is to protect its other sports (ie; position itself for the next big realignment). Newsflash, an FCS program does nothing to help you in that regard. Remember, this is a school that has been very NEAR the top of the conf. heirarcy (CUSA was a top 5-6 league before the last shakeup). Charlotte is not doing this in order to play in the CAA and FCS football. Sorry, thats just a fact.
