49ers basketball, football on Fox Sports Radio (730-AM)

The Charlotte 49ers have agreed to a three-year deal with Charlotte's Fox Sports 730-AM to carry men's basketball and football games.

The station will also carry "The Alan Major Show," as well as expand to football broadcasts and "The Brad Lambert Show" in 2013.

Matt Swierad, the smooth and tireless voice of the 49ers, will start his 11th year as the voice of Charlotte men's basketball next season.

I like the station format better (no QCB is always a plus), but unless 730 is planning to boost it's signal strength, this feels a lot like a lateral move. Any financial figures to go with this announcement?

Agree with 49RFBN on their signal, but our games hardly ever get aired anyway. Glad to see coaches shows added, too. If anyone has spent any time listening to Fox 730, you know they already talk a ton of Niners sports. When was the last time Charlotte got any love on 610 other than being the butt of a joke?

Actualy all of our basketball games were aired on 1660am. Which in the winter months meant everyone off South Blvd could hear it. Now I'm a bit concerned only folks in Cramerton will hear it. I hope 730 is planning to ask the FCC for a signal boost sometime in the next few years.

All the games were aired on 1660 assuming no conflicts, which wasn't always the case. WFNZ only has 5,000 watts of power, compared to 10,000 with WZGV. Their nighttime coverage isn't much worse than 1660. I'd prefer someone talking Niners Monday-Friday anyway...not just airing our game broadcasts. Maybe I'm in the minority. WFNZ has never paid us any attention. 730 has shown us respect since the day they took the air. You call it a lateral move, but where did you think we would go...WBT?

Format-wise 730 wins hands down! Much better than FZN in that regard. My primary concern with 730 is you have to work to get a clear signal at night in UCity (same as with 1660) and that we are their flagship program.

Legitimate concerns and I'm with you mostly, 49RFBN. When I weigh pros and cons, FS730 comes out slightly ahead if they're willing to air coaches shows and have our coaches/players on their shows regularly. 730 is only local 5 hours a day, but they talk more local sports in 1 hour than 610 does all day. It's the same Bobcats, Panthers, NFL, NBA trash 24/7 over there. I'm excited about what the change could bring.

I'm excited about the move and hope 730 embraces our program unlike the former radio station who rarely had anything good to say about the Niners if they mentioned them at all.

I agree with 49RFBN. Anything without QCB an Hayseed is a plus. I don't live in Charlotte anymore but anytime those two opened there mouths my dial went spinning. I don't know what Mark Packer was thinking by having those two idiots on his show. It's no wonder her was fired.

Why is the 800 lb gorilla in the living room being ignored? Its a LOSER team with a LOSER coach. Nothing will change over the next 3 years if they keep status quo.

NCSU new hiree Lutz is smiling at the lunacy and incompetence ...

There is no reason that UNCC shouldnt be on a FM channel. Judy has a relationship with Signature Sports that borders on nepotism! They are the reason we have such terrible marketing! If you think the marketing at UNCC is bad fire Judy Rose and Signature Sports!

Signature Sports Group doesn't "do" the 49ers marketing. They pay teh University a guarantee to sell multi-media rights. Clearing the games on radio is part of their business.

I didn't know that AM730 existed. I will have to start listening to them. If the other posts are true about 730 talking more about local sports then this is a good fit. 610 is terrible since Packer left. Garcia can't finish a sentence with out saying "you know" or some other crutch word. Its so bad it takes him a half hour just to get his point across.

Anon @ 9:03

No one is ignoring anything here. You're just delusional and obviously still bitter about Lutz's firing. You can't judge a new coach by one season. I'm still a Lutz fan, and I'm glad to see him land at NCSU as an assistant. But the fact is he was no longer effective as the head coach at Charlotte. If you'll give Major a little time I think you'll see he's capable of turning this program back around.

610 doesn't talk UNCC sports because nobody cares about them. You 12 would be the only ones who would actually listen.

I'll be happy with 730AM. Maybe it was 1660 with QCB and Hayseed that I listened to...but I'm sorry those guys were idiots. The guy who interviewed Brad Lambert the other day was brutal to listen to. It sounds like they went up to Shelby and found a guy hanging out at the local fishing shop to do their sports show. (No offense Shelby)

michaelprocton must be an appie fan who is still upset that App has yet to make the move to FBS

Like anon 10:36, I had no idea FS730 existed. I agree with all the others that say 610 is awful. The sports talk format there will soon die, and the losses of Gary Williams and Packer will be the reasons why.

Only 865 days until Charlotte vs. Campbell on the gridiron. GO NINERS!!!!!!!!

Hey Michael Proctologist! Get a clue, Charlotte has been top 80 or better in D1 mens bball attendance for over 15 years so there are plenty who care about the Niners apparently! They even rank ahead of several teams in the "great" ACC. Look it up if you dont believe it.
