49ers land 3-star recruit

The 49ers just received a letter-of-intent from offensive lineman Casey Perry, a Rivals.com 3-star recruit from Durham Hillside.

Perry, 6-3, 295 pounds, was considered about an inch short for FBS schools, according to a feature story about Perry in the (Raleigh) News & Observer last fall. He'd also been recruited heavily by Appalachian State and Western Carolina and had committed earlier to Gardner-Webb.

"It's huge," said 49ers recruiting coordinator Phil Ratliff of landing Perry. "It shows we can go against the established programs for these kids. It's hard to see how 1 inch makes much of a difference with a player like Casey."

The 49ers have signed 23 players as of 1:15 p.m. today, most recently adding Perry, Ayden-Grifton running back/defensive back Kariym Gent and West Montgomery quarterback Jaquil Capel. Capel had already committed verbally to Appalachian State.

It sure is nice to see a start-up Niner program land two recruits (including a 3 star) over such a storied and respected FCS program as Appalachian State!

What a great day to be a Niner!

Great news for your football program. How about updates on our incoming soccer commitments. We need to continue to build on our success!

forget about stars. Go back 3-4 years and see where most of the Rivals three star this and nc preps all these stars are.Look it up and you will see pages of washed out names.Stars don't mean anything, they just sell subscriptions to websites. Most of the future stars of tomorrow don't have "stars" ATTACHED TO THEM, HTEY EARN IT.

Actually, str8talk, there is a very high correlation between schools that sign a lot of highly "starred" recruits and those schools success on the field. This isn't to say that all highly ranked players achieve great success; certainly some never do, and some unheralded players blossom, but overall, highly rated players do succeed at a high rate.

You picked up the real deal with Capel. As an ASU Alum, that one stings.

Fair enough. Can we at least be happy that we got a 6-3 295lb lineman with a winning background?

Thanks, ASU Alum. Hopefully, once these redshirts become 5th year seniors, we'll be able to wage some serious war with App. It'll make a nice rivalry for football fans

Agreed. It's high time we started seeing news about the ANNUAL Charlotte-App St game. I know App has their traditional SoCon rivals, but I would love to see them and us be rivals. It would be great for both schools, especially if we can become a playoff team as fast as Old Dominion has.

Glad to see we got such a well-thought-of O-lineman. I also love our crop of QBs.

Just 577 days until game one. GO NINERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Capel would have been on the field for ASU come September, although probably not at QB right away. He is blazing fast, so Moore would have got him some touches in the return game and RB/WR at least. That may be what got him away from Boone, the chance to be a full-time 4-yr QB. I don't know all the rest of the Charlotte crop, but if he is any indication of the overall talent you are bringing in, it may not be 5 years for that potential rivalry to heat up. It is already happening on the recruiting trail!

As a 49er fan I have nothing but deep respect for Appalachian St. It is a first class program. I look forward to the opportunity to play them on a regular basis.

To be the best you got to beat the best. The day we beat them I'm going to crawl up on fence and crow like a rooster.

Congratulations to the University of North Carolina at Concord for signing the only 3-star player in the history of recruiting to decommit from Gardner-Webb. Another outstanding job of reporting David Scott. I have some swampland I'd like to sell you.

Poor kid... God Bless him.

Congratulations to the 49er football program. The Charlotte version of UNC got started late. There was no state university in Charlotte prior to the 60”s. There weren’t any Ph.D. programs prior to the 80’s. And now a football program in the 2010’s. Although the school started late, it is now one of the premier schools in the state in its offerings. The future success of the football program will directly depend upon the affiliation the school is able to make. It has certainly made a great start showing that it has some recruiting power.

Sustaining the success shown with the first recruiting class will depend upon future success of the program on the field and affiliation with the right conference. Affiliation has greatly affected the basketball program. Perhaps with both a football and a basketball program, the future of all the 49er’s athletic programs will be unlimited.

"Heavily recruited" and offering a scholarship are entirely different. I follow ASU recruiting intensely and never heard Perry's name mentioned before this article. NCpreps reported Capel said a coaching change pushed him to UNCC. He wanted to play QB and ASU's former OC promised him that opportunity, but new OC & QB coach Scott Satterfield nixed the idea. Capel was recruited strictly as an athlete by ASU. The young man made the decision that he thinks is best for him. Hope he enjoys playing GW, Campbell, Morehead State and Charleston Southern when he could have been going up against ECU, Georgia, Michigan, and FCS powers Montana and McNeese the few 4 years.

Baby Huey - Not quite. the old joke is that UNCC stood for University of Newell, Close to Charlotte. Get it right! :-)

But seriously - while every fan of every school always feels good on signing day, I really like where Lambert and the coaching staff are going. They have a detailed plan, and they are working it. I love that they are getting players with flexibility and ability to play multiple positions.

Can't wait for 8/31/13. GO NINERS!!!!!!!

7:29......sorry to inform you, but Lambert didn't recruit this kid as a QB either. Nice try though.
