49ers' Mayfield arrested for marijuana possession

DeMario A. Mayfield
Charlotte 49ers sophomore forward DeMario Mayfield was arrested for misdemeanor possession of marijuana early Tuesday. Mayfield, who was released on $250 bond, had been stopped by Charlotte police at 1:57 a.m. for failing to stop at a red light, according to Mecklenburg County Sheriff records.

Mayfield was suspended for the 49ers’ game Wednesday at Dayton by coach Alan Major for what the school said was breaking undisclosed team rules. Mayfield is scheduled for a March court appearance.

Mayfield, in his first season playing for the 49ers after transferring from Georgia, is averaging 10.7 points and 6.8 rebounds.

Major and athletics director Judy Rose would not comment on Mayfield’s arrest, or say what Mayfield’s status with the team is. Charlotte’s next game is Saturday at Richmond.

Major recruits .. 0 for 2 so far. Where are the defenders? Three suspensions this season, numerous benching of starters. Drug arrest. Let's give him more time !!!

What a shame that a young man would get behind the wheel and light up.

You people are embarrassing.

@NCdirtdigger

It doesn't look like he was under the influence when he was driving. He would have received a DUI if so. Seems he committed a traffic violation and the cop probably smelled weed in the car.

How many lives will be destroyed by misdemeanor mj charges b4 our country comes to their senses?

Legalize it, and stop wasting our time. We want to smoke weed and waste our own time!

dalonte hill - no one said Major's players were perfect. Mayfield has no prior record, so there's a chance this was just one severely stupid move by a 20-year-old. We don't know all the details; let's wait until they come out.

Anon 7:04 - yes, give Major the 4 years required to stock the entire roster of his players. Some will wash out. Happens everywhere, to everyone. If this was Kentucky or UConn or somewhere like that where all of your best players play 1 year and go pro, then yes, 2 years would be enough time to pass judgment on the coach. For an Atlantic 10 team where 1 kid goes to the NBA every 5 years, you cannot conclude success or failure in 2 years. So yes, give him more time!

All that being said, dang, Mayfield, what a bonehead move! What is it with athletes and the hippie lettuce anyway? Did you run the red light because you were in a hurry to get the 3 boxes of Twinkies you knew you were going to need after lighting up? Give up the tree, dude, it will not help you on the court or in the classroom.

Wonder if he bought it from Rodney White......

Mayfield - there's only one word for ya buddy - stupid!! what are you thinking? Er, that's right, you're NOT thinking.......

He goes from off the court to into the court.

Legalize it? Not when 70% of all child abuse is done by people committing substance abuse.

Mayfield is arrested
My reaction: As long as he is in a Charlotte uniform, I'll support him and whatever the coach decides to do.
GTG reaction: Chill out dude! Just a little weed. You're probably one of those people who boo the team because you support Lutz.

Green is not allowed to play
My reaction: As long as he is in a Charlotte uniform, I'll support him and whatever the coach decides to do.
GTG reaction: The sooner we get rid of these worthless shooters Bobby brought in, the better we'll be. F*** Lutz and F*** Derrio.

Luka stops playing
My reaction: As long as he is in a Charlotte uniform, I'll support him and whatever the coach decides to do.
GTG reaction: DAMN RIGHT! Luka is not a thug - he's a white European and a wonderful person. We need to support him through this difficult time.

Briscoe requests more playing time
My reaction: As long as he is in a Charlotte uniform, I'll support him and whatever the coach decides to do.
GTG reaction: Ban sokool. Also, ban everyone else who doesn't believe the same stuff we do.

Jones says 'eat a dick' on twitter
My reaction: As long as he is in a Charlotte uniform, I'll support him and whatever the coach decides to do.
GTG reaction: Give him a 5 game suspension. He's a bum anyway and I've always hated him. Oh, wait, he's ineligible now? Just goes to show how Lutz brought in retards.

Spears wishes Lutz was still here.
My reaction: As long as he is in a Charlotte uniform, I'll support him and whatever the coach decides to do.
GTG reaction: Smile, shrug it off, and basically not worry about it at all. ;)

Anonymous 9:46 Child abuse and weed? You win the award by far for the dumbest and most irrelevant comment on here.

Notice you said substance abuse. Alcohol and caffeine are much more abused substances and they are already legal. That being said, I think we have to let due process take its course before passing any type of judgment on him. Was it found on him personally or in the car? Has he passed previous drug tests? Is he allowed to make mistakes? He is only 20 years old going through a time in his life where drugs and alcohol are everywhere. I think the Charlotte Observer article that mentioned that he is the father of an infant is distasteful. Do you mention that other athletes have children as well in your sports articles? I watch the guy play basketball. If he plays basketball and has a team of children then I could care less. That is his problem. I do not like anyone that represents our University to represent it in a negative manner as he has, but again he is only 20.

Ok, so here's the thing...

Who cares?!?

There are some total morons that post here. Substance abuse? Child abuse? WTF are you talking about? Did we just read the same article? The guy got caught with weed! Not heroin or crack dumbass.

It will be legal within the decade. Suck it up.

So if you'll excuse me, I'm done writing because I have a long day of beating my kids, committing violent crimes, and ruining society with my recreational marijuana use ahead of me. I used to go to school and was a basketball phenom until I started smoking.

And you know what else?

I'm so high right now that you might get a contact buzz from reading this.

Should have hired Marshall.

10 million children have suffered abuse and 7 million of those were abused by someone under substance abuse. It's so sad

A guy gets arrested. He's a good representative of our program.

Phil Jones & Shamari Spears show up in the NCCU game this year to support their former teammates. They're both terrible people.

Makes sense if you have an agenda.

Where in this article does it talk about child abuse?

I agree it's sad, but it has zero to do with is article.

Children are starving to death in Africa. People kill themselves working in factories in China.

You know what these situations all have in common?

They have zero to do with this blog.

A guy smoking pot in his car. Happens every day.
