Henry's steals: By the numbers

49ers point guard Pierria Henry was named the Atlantic 10's rookie of the week for a second time this season on Monday. Henry earned the honor after a big game against Rhode Island (14 points, 3 rebounds, 5 steals, 5 assists.)

Henry remains second in the league in steals (2.8 per game), but he's closing the gap on leader T.J. McConnell of Duquesne (2.9). Henry is also tied for fourth nationally in steals.

Henry's five steals against the Rams gives him 58 for the season, most in school history for a freshman. He broke Keith Williams' record of 54 set in 1983-84.

It's unlikely Henry can break the school record this season. Eddie Basden had 93 in 2004-05 (a 3.2 average). But Henry is on pace to challenge Delano Johnson for second most. Johnson averaged 2.8 in 1990-91 (77 total) and Williams averaged 2.7 in '84-85 (72 total).

Still completely unimpressed with Major's coaching ability but maybe this years recruits (including Henry) along with a pretty solid class coming in next year will finally turn the corner for this program, go Niners!

Rboggs81 - Patience is the key. Remember that we are at a level where we don't get many NBA prospects and just about everyone on our team and in our conference are all but certain to play 4 years of college ball. Given that fact, we can't pass judgment on Major until the entire roster is made up of people he recruited. That's in his 4th year. When he got here, the cupboard was so bare, we have to give him that time.

What I have seen so far leads me to believe that he can be a little better a recruiter than Lutz was, but Lutz has the edge in game-day Xs and Os. Perhaps that's a product of working under Thad Motta these last few years, as Motta is a fabulous recruiter but leaves something to be desired as a game-day coach. I'm going to view the glass as half-full for now, and believe Major will improve as a game-day coach as he gains more experience.

As far as his recruits go, so far Henry looks like the best of the lot, and I think he can be a star in the A-10 before he's done.

Go Niners!!!!!!!!!!
