Rhode Island observations

Observations from Charlotte's 73-66 victory Saturday against Rhode Island:

• The 49ers looked as sharp as they have in a while in the first half, opening up a 19-point lead, their largest lead of the season in the first half.  The 49ers' 40 points in the first half were a season high, as was its 15-point halftime lead.

A lot of that came over a Rhode Island zone, and the 49ers cooled off considerably when the Rams went man-to-man.

• But, of course, things could have been easier if the 49ers had been better at the line. They were 19 of 38. Deuce Briscoe was 4 of 10 and Pierria Henry 8 of 15 and DeMario Mayfield 5 of 9.

• It was homecoming for the 49ers and more than 50 former 49ers basketball players were introduced at halftime following an alumni game earlier in the day. Also on hand was Lee Rose, coach of the 1977 Final Four team.

• Henry had five steals and now has 58 for the season, a Charlotte freshman record.

• As Rhode Island tried to get back in the game in the second half, Mayfield flung a pass out of bounds. The pass was so off the mark that it sailed behind the 49ers bench. Mayfield smiled sheepishly and pointed to himself, taking full blame.

• Mayfield's double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) was his third in the last four games.

• Derrio Green didn't play again. He's now been a DNP for two straight games and played just four minutes against La Salle three games ago.

The niners built their lead against the man to man and had trouble with the zone. Did the O even have a reporter see the game or were they at the JC Smith ladies game?

First Davidson now Rhode Island!

Majors for Coach of The Year!

Fundamentals are a crutch for the talentless. Why does Majors need to teach the fundamentals of good FT shooting - when his players have such pure talent?

Just throw it up there!
...half of em should go in...

Do you honestly expect the observer to send a reporter 10 mins away when the almighty team from 2 hours away is playing?

we should be so lucky to get a humble box score.

when UNC-Cheat is on the court, nothing else matters...

I just think if you are going to give observations then they should be accurate. I think David does a good job reporting in general, but he got this one statement backwards. At least I have the courage to post with my name unlike most trolls that post anonymously. At least give us a consistent name so we know who you are.

My take on today's game:

There was some good things to see today. One thing I've noticed is that the young guys have tons of potential, and they are only a little bit away from becoming good contributors.

EVic - He didn't play scared today as he has in the past. He needs to gain some weight and strength, and then his game will improve.
TWill - He can rebound, drive to the hoop, and it starting to defend better. He needs to develop an outside shot to become a better player. Teams will start to defend him on the drive more without the jump shot.
Henry - He needs to continue to be more consistent. He was quiet in the first half. Also needs to work on FT shooting.
Mayfield - He is showing why he was a good prospect out of high school. If he keeps improving his FT % then he will be a major factor in his JR and SR years.

I think these guys will improve in the off season and we will get better.

Today's performance was good for the first 15 minutes. After that we played average to poor for the most part. It looked like the zone defense played a big part in it. We were out rebounded 40-32, and we were 19-38 from the foul line. I don't think you come away with a win in most games where this happens. We did shoot 48% from the field to their 35%, so that is the difference. Only 7 points off the bench today in 59 minutes of playing time so that was not a good sign for our bench play. I think Mayfield was the MVP today with the double double despite JB being the high scorer. I would like to see more drive and dish to JB when the zone is in place. Deuce got some good looks, but couldn't knock them down for the most part. Braz seems to be more concerned in what the ref's are calling than trying to play his game. He needs to stop that to remain a go to guy.

I seriously reject the idea that Lee Rose cannot spell. You should have stayed in school.

If you are implying that Major is a poor coach because the niners don't free throws very well chew on this: UNC's team free throw percentage is even worse than Charlotte's. I guess all those Mc Donalds All Americans are just talentless! (Insert obligatory "you are an idiot" statement here)

Judy's hair dresser probably knows more about college basketball than you do. And who even says hair dresser? Aren't they called stylists these days? Go back to the 80's where you came from anonymous person. Go Niners!!!

4:39 - Send him back to the CIAA? Wow, I had no idea Ohio St was in the CIAA. I guess you learn something new every day.

Or, it could be that you are a racist idiot and assume that because Major is black, he must have come from the CIAA (and even if that is the case, I won't even bother to mention that the best team in the CIAA from 1978-2009 was Virginia Union, who was coached by a white guy).

Or, it could be that you are just a regular idiot, who thinks that the only people alive who are capable of coaching a championship team are people that have already won a championship, and everyone else is a bum. A regular idiot also thinks that after 1.5 years, at a school that is at the level where all players play 4 years, is enough time to determine if that coach cannot be successful. Which would make you every bit as much an idiot as the idiot who posts that the 1977 coach has DAMANDED the athletic dept. put the UNC back in the team name. In other words, dumb as a speed bump.
