Can Charlotte 49ers beat Hawks again?

The 49ers will return to the scene of one of their five Atlantic 10 regular-season victories Tuesday when they face Saint Joseph's in a first-round conference tournament game at Hagan Arena.

Charlotte beat the Hawks 57-52 on Jan. 7 in what was the 49ers' second A-10 conference victory in as many tries. But after that 2-0 league start, Charlotte lost six straight in the league and ended up with a 5-11 record (13-16 overall) and the 12th seed in the tournament.

Saint Joseph's, which lost just three regular-season games at home (Charlotte, Saint Louis and Pennsylvania), went on to finish 19-12 and 9-7 and is the fifth seed.

Charlotte's victory in January wasn't pretty: The 49ers shot just 34 percent from the field. But they forced 16 Hawks turnovers and got a superb performance from freshman point guard Pierria Henry (11 points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists).

The 49ers-St. Joe's winner will play fourth-seed St. Bonaventure in a quarterfinal game Friday in Atlantic City, N.J.

NO.

Thanks Alan Major. We are now a completely irreleavant team in a completely irrelevant league. I wonder if Hal Wissell is available?

No and thank god. I don't want to think about this train wreck of a program for another 7 months

maybe the Niners could play the Charlotte Latin Hawks. Probably be a good game

No.

If we give Major a contract extension, please don't extend Judy's contract, too.

what an embarrassment. can we forfeit our "invite"?

Unlikely! Ha Ha, Major is nothing special and the program is in full retreat!

I'll give Alan another year to show me something. I see flashes of promise but then we fall flat. Derrio Green was an absolute bust, and was supposed to be a real three point threat. that would have opened things up.

Improvement, 12th seed in a 14 team league after 2 years. Awesome, maybe we'll be the 10th or 11th seed next year. Major rocks!

Once again, I'm perplexed because I don't have an agenda for or against a particular coach.

The agenda people say that every 19+ win season by Lutz was a failure without a tournament bid.

Luckily, the agenda people also said that Major was left with a full cupboard ninernation.net/index.php?topic=27804.msg487180#msg487180
Coach Major said the same thing.

But entire teams under Lutz had poor attitudes because they accepted losing.

Now, under Major, the entire team has poor attitudes because they learned from Major not to accept losing.

Now the agenda people say that going from a #13 seed in he A10 to a #12 seed in the A10 is a SUCCESS because we're moving in the right direction.

Got it? Good. Because I don't. It just seems like embittered fans who had an axe to grind against Lutz are now reaching for straws.

We are improving. We will be the Number 1 seed in the A10 Tournament in 2024. All we have to do is continue our rate of improvement. It gets better. In 2019 we will be back to where we were for Lutz's final year (5 seed).

Yippee. We finished 12. No way can we win at St. Joe's. Train is well off the track

Which is funny because we've already beaten them there.

We went 5-11. We started 2-0. You do the math.

Buckle up, trolls, and strap on your hockey helmets 'cause I'm about to cheer you all up.

Enough whining about how we are healthier this year. Enough whining about how he played worse against an easy noncon this year.

You're forgetting that the A10 had a down year last year. This year is much more improved. And in a couple weeks, the A10 will have TWO bids to show for it! Now, against THIS YEAR'S A10, we moved from 13th to 12th.

There. Feeling #pwned yet?

Majors installing a new attitude with everyone on the team. These guys hate to lose! Bobby recruited players with a me first attitude. Now the guys play with passion! Majors coaches with passion! Brazwell is becoming a leader! They hate it when they give up big 16 point leads every game and roll over on senior night and homecoming. They will lose Tuesday night - get high Wednesday. But just wait till next year!! Look out!!

Wow. Charlotte fans are a rough bunch...!

I saw a 49er team that came to compete every game and really only got it put on them once all season (against Temple). And the A10 is a lot tougher than you folks know.... Definitely underrated. They'll likely have at least one team in the Final Four this year (TU/SLU, pick 'em) and it wouldn't shock me if X got that far also -- if they make it in -- after all they've been through this year, they'll have a major chip on their shoulders. . .St. Joe's will definitely embarrass somebody if they get in. That team is dangerous. . . .

There's reason for niner nation to be optimistic, but only if it gets some top-flight help. Some of the A10s best teams this year are very young: SJU; LaSalle; UMass. Even XU, SLU & Rich have a nucleus of returning underclassmen (as does Temple, moving to the Big East), so Major will have his work cut out for him. . . . He needs to get up to NYC and Philly and get recruiting. The talent pool around Charlotte isn't big enuf w/all the schools in line ahead of the 49ers.

Wow - A10 has three Final Four contenders? Maybe St. Joe's will go on a Cinderella run and the A10 can get all four Final Four teams.

And, yeah, North Carolina is not a good place to find basketball players. Really small talent pool.

Thank you for enlightening our doltish fanbase!

We beat the SoCON champ by 24 who beat Kansas. This team is so inconsistent its incredible. From down 20 to UMASS to taking the lead to losing by 10. Had Xavier beat for 30 minutes and then fall apart.

I'll give Major and the players time. Need to be middle of the pack A-10 next year. Otherwise, we are going nowhere with this new group.

Disagree. This team is very consistent.

We generally beat the bad teams. It's teams like the "socon champ" that can be described as inconsistent. They beat Kansas and then lose to Samford. In the recent past, a Charlotte team might have been able to beat Kansas and then lose to Samford. Not any more.

We find ways to lose to the decent teams. Even if we have a big lead, we find ways to lose. When we were up 14 to Xavier, I knew in the back of my mind that we would lose. It's what we do now.

Some call it rebuilding, I call it sucking with no signs of a turnaround any time soon.

prediction: 49es will be in NCAA tourney in '13....

We have improved. We were 2-14, 10-20, last place last year. This year, we were 5-11, 13-17 (I'm assuming we lose tonight), 12 seed. We also got blown out a lot less frequently. That does seem like small improvement, but I think we should take it.

The next recruiting class is supposedly very good. I expect a winning A-10 record and serious consideration for an NCAA bid. If we have a losing conference and overall record, go ahead and find a new coach.
