Charlotte 49ers add Chapel Hill point guard

The 49ers have added a fourth freshman recruit for the 2012-13 basketball season. Chapel Hill High point guard Denzel Ingram, named the state's 3A player of the year by NCPreps.com, visited Charlotte over the weekend and made his decision immediately afterward.

"It really seemed like a good fit for me,” said Ingram, who is second on Chapel Hill’s career scoring list with 1,390 points. "I’m a pass-first point guard, but if I’m needed to score, I’ll do that. I really just try and make the guys around me better.”

The 5-foot-11 Ingram averaged 23.9 points last season for a Tigers team that went 25-0 in the regular season. Only former North Carolina guard Ranzino Smith scored more points in Chapel Hill history than Ingram. He said he also considered Tennessee State, Morehead State, Georgia Southern, American and Appalachian State. Ingram said Cincinnati also expressed interest in him recently.

The 49ers' other freshman recruits are power forwards Willie Clayton (Thomasville, Ga.) and Darion Clark (Oak Hill Academy) and guard Shawn Lester (Mooresville).

49ers notes

-- Charlotte's Briana Gwaltney recently set the 49ers' career softball home run record when she hit her 21st in a 9-7 loss against Temple on Friday. Gwaltney's homer was her second of the season. Charlotte hosts N.C. State in a doubleheader on Wednesday.

-- 49ers midfielder Will Mayhew has recovered from a knee injury and returned to spring soccer practice Monday. Mayhew tore his ACL last season against Maryland and missed the 49ers' run to the College Cup final. The 49ers' spring season continues March 31 with two games in Rock Hill against East Tennessee State and College of Charleston, then concludes with home games against the alumni (April 14), Davidson (April 17) and Appalachian State (April 21, on the practice field).

Niner Nation is already blowing him up. They can't wait until Midnight Madness when they crown him the next Derrick Rose and the 49ers make it to the Final Four.

Welcome aboard Denzel. You definitely could have done worse.

Of course he could have done worse....We look like Kentucky compared to these schools!! Lets go beat out Chapel Hill and Kansas for recruits and then get excited..

did any of Majors recruits coming in consider a single bcs team? I see Ingram was recruited by hpu? Uncg? Yikes! Must be awfully slow and small. The kid is in heart of hoops mecca and thats all that wanted him? Would be nice to at least see a vcu or odu on him.

He should fare well if we keep playing bottom feeder non league teams like we did this yr.

Its UNCC 49ers not dead white queen 49ers
(havent you been warned a million times already?)
will add a Chapel Hill player meaning a UNCC 49er will be officially a
UNCCCH 49er. Now that could be confusing for the simpleton brains like dummie Rose and her sports writer minions.

UNC Charlotte Chapel Hill 49er.

Interesting. I thought Major wanted big guards.

Judy will be making an announcement in the next few days flaunting Major and her success. She has found us a conference for all sports and Major will have his big guards. Yes folks! The Charlotte 49ers will be moving all sports to the Pop Warner League of Charlottee.

This kid may not have the ratings, but he is the Carolina 3-A Conference POY, was All-Conference, as well as a Jordan Brand Regional Game & NC-SC All Star Participant. He was also NCPreps POY beating out 5-star recruits such as Kennedy Meeks. He is also 5-11 which is not too small for a point guard especially when your starter is 6-3. He fills the basket and believes in defense which is key in coach Major's system. I think he will make very good use of his scholarship. Welcome to Niner Nation.

You know who was a 5-star recruit coming out of high school? Martin Iti.

Wow, impressive. Look at all those schools Charlotte beat out for this stud-to-be!

More schools were interested in this young man than people are interested in MIcheal Procton's ignorant opinions. (and there are many more people than schools)

Get ready Niners. Braswell and Nickerson are the next to leave as soon as they find programs to take them.

What a joke of a program and coach.

Don't worry Niners. NA will instruct you which songs to listen to and everything will be well again. I advise you to do what he says too. He doesn't like to have his authority questioned.

Alex - I had managed to block that name from my memory. Now it's back, to haunt me and keep me awake at night. Thanks loads.

But seriously - Iti is just one example of how inexact recruiting is. After Ranzino Smith set the scoring record at CH High, how many minutes did he play at Carolina - 15? 20? And last I checked, Harrison Barnes is regressing faster than a French fighting unit. Even the big boys miss from time to time.

Let's see how Ingram plays before we crown or demonize him.
