The 49ers are among the "leading candidates" for membership in Sun Belt Conference expansion, according to a CBSSports.com report.
It's the second Football Bowl Subdivision league the 49ers have been linked to recently. Charlotte -- which begins football in 2013 -- has has been mentioned if a potential new conference merging Conference USA with the Mountain West were to expand.
Athletics director Judy Rose has said she will not comment on conference affiliation, but that the 49ers will look at all available options.
Charlotte will begin football as a Football Championship Subdivision independent. It will have to wait at least two years to move up to FBS and will need to be invited by a league to do so.
The CBSSports.com report says the Sun Belt -- where the 49ers played from 1976-91 -- is also considering Texas-San Antonio, which began football last season. No formal invitations have been offered, but the report says Charlotte and UTSA could join as early as 2013.
UTSA, however, has already accepted an invitation to join the Western Athletic Conference. Rose said last week that the 49ers are happy to remain in the Atlantic 10.

Don't they need to expand the stadium right away to move up to FBS?
Temporary seats can take the capacity to around 25,000 in a couple days. Not really an issue.
The real issue here is that it is the Sun Belt.
The only way I'd even be remotely okay with this is if it is only for football or if App State comes with us. At least with App it would give us one game per year that fans care about. :sigh:

It would be nice if we could move football and baseball to the Sun Belt and leave everything else in the A-10.

Are you kidding me!!! Please tell me this is football only. This sucks for all other sports except football. I don't understand why the non-BCS schools don't talk about forming a reasonable league that will include stronger tv markets and be something ESPN could market. We need to stop watching from the sidelines and get aggressive.

Why would the 49ers want to leave a conference sending 8 teams to post season (4 to NCAA and 4 to NIT) to join a 1 bid league. The Sun Belt may want the 49ers but I doubt the 49ers want the Sun Belt. Not if they're smart.
Someone please remove Judy Rose from her post! The 49ers need to remain in one Conference, and the Sun Belt is as good as any. The Atlantic 10 has not been kind or a positive effect to the Charlotte Basketball program.
Judy Rose is just a stubborn, incompetent Bee Itch, with a Title IX agenda as her only care.

Anything is better that a-10. UNCC has gone downhill since they joined the a-10.
This is depressing.
Would rather be in FCS with a chance to make playoffs than be in the Sun Belt and only ever take money games on the road. The Sun Belt is where football programs can never succeed.
Judy has done a great job at Charlotte. She will guide us down the best path.....

The A10 has been such a disappointment for Charlotte. If we miss this chance to join an FBS conference we will regret it in a few short years. In the end, it really is about the football. If CUSA isn't sriously recruiting us then we MUST move to the Sun Belt. It would be much better than remaining in a conference no one in NC cares about which does not and never will support FBS football.
Sun Belt isn't happening. Charlotte will be in CUSA within the next few weeks.
It's not the basketball conference it once was and its not as good as the A10 in basketball, but it is the best place for all our sports collectively.
CUSA is an upgrade for football (obviously), baseball, soccer, and just about every sport other than men's basketball.
