Hopkins withdraws from Charlotte coaching search

Syracuse assistant coach Mike Hopkins has withdrawn his name from consideration for the men's head basketball coaching position with the Charlotte 49ers, two sources confirmed on Monday.

Hopkins just completed his 15th season as an assistant to longtime Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim. He finished his playing career with the Orange in 1993. He came to Syracuse from Mater Dei High in Los Angeles and had a brief professional career in the CBA and in Europe before pursuing coaching.

Hopkins was believed to be the first candidate offered the 49ers' job, sources said. The 49ers fired 12-year coach Bobby Lutz on March 15. Xavier associate head coach and former Wake Forest assistant Pat Kelsey remains the frontrunner for the position, sources said.

A decision could come by the end of the week.

I think Pat Kelsey is worth a shot. He knows the league and should have some regional ties. At least there is a potential upside rather than some of these washed up dudes they have been floating.

HURLEY TO WAGNER; HOPKINS (CHARLOTTE), FRASCHILLA (IONA) WITHDRAW
Monday, April 5, 2010, 10:37 AM EST [General]

A few tidbits before I head to this Hall of Fame deal:

- Source told FOXSports.com that St. Benedict's coach Dan Hurley has accepted the Wagner job.

- Syracuse assistant Mike Hopkins, the coach-in-waiting when Jim Boeheim retires, withdrew from the Charlotte opening. The candidates include Pat Kelsey (Xavier), Russell Springmann (Texas), Joe Dooley (Kansas) and Alan Major (Ohio State).

"Hopkins was believed to be the first candidate offered the 49ers' job...Xavier associate head coach and former Wake Forest assistant Pat Kelsey remains the frontrunner for the position."

So how has Kelsey "rmained" the frontrunner if Hopkins was offered the job first?

I'm hoping for Kelsey, Dooley or Gottfried.

Of course I meant "remained." Fat-fingering again...

How nice that someone may be named by the end of the week. Signing day is a week away ! Hope its Kelsey and hope he has some recruits in his hip pocket, because whoever it is is short on time ! But, thats the good 'ol Charlotte 49er way !

It's obvious that Hopkins didn't want to serve under a male bashing AD. Only a no name coach would serve under her

Ananymous...you are a sexist idiot. Judy Rose is an exceptional AD...just ask any coach who has ever served under her or, for that matter, ask any of her fellow ADs. You just have no clue!!

She's the one that fought football until she was forced to yield. She's the one that put pressure on the men's basketball coach until she forced him out. You PC statement is out dated. She's the problem.

You still don't have a clue. She has been pushing football for at least 10 years. Unfortunately, the previous Chancellor did not agree. Look up the record...it's all public. Do yourself a favor and work from facts.

You are dreaming. Check your facts. Judy

Judy is the problem. She has not fought for football over the past 10 years. Her only comment about football was "Title 9." She is reactive not proactive and IS NOT well thought of among her peers. Judy being named AD when the state said coaches could not hold the additional role of AD was the biggest mistake Jeff Mullins made at Charlotte. We are years behind where we should be.

Judy Rose has no clue. She defines incompetence. Should have been fired 15 years ago.

Maybe with Kelsey we would have someone that knows how to beat Xavier since Bobby never had much luck in that department.

It's hard to focus on Xavier and your AD at the same time. Xavier and MSU are the only two teams in the NCAA to make it to the sweet sixteen the last two years.

Wake Forest terminates basketball coach. AD says he keeps a list of potential coaches b/c no AD wants to be caght by surprise or caght off guard when he has an opening.
