Highly-rated combo guard picks 49ers

One visit to Charlotte and a few hours of basketball were all Ge-Lawn Guyn, one of the top-rated combo guards in the Class of 2010, needed to make the 49ers his college home.

Guyn and his parents drove to Charlotte over the weekend and after participating in Sunday’s Elite Basketball Camp at Halton Arena returned home, but not before giving Charlotte coach Bobby Lutz a commitment he would join the 49ers.

Guyn, a 6-foot-3, 165-pound guard who plays at Scott County in Georgetown, Ky., is ranked the 143rd best player in the Class of 2010 by recruiting Web site Rivals.com and the 33rd best shooting guard.

“I really didn’t know a lot about Charlotte but after they expressed interest in me, I began to do some research of my own on the Internet,” said Guyn, 18. “Then when I came for a visit Sunday, I really bonded with some of the players and the coaching staff.”

Guyn had already made a visit to Western Kentucky and had planned a visit to Oregon State, but has canceled that trip. He said he also received recruiting interest from Cincinnati, Indiana and Xavier and Dayton, both rivals of Charlotte in the Atlantic 10.

“Charlotte has an up-tempo style that I like,” he said. “I’ve watched some film of some of their games. They get up and down the floor, shoot the 3. That certainly fits my style.

“Unlike a lot of players, I like to play defense. I think I can contribute immediately and hopefully get Charlotte back in the NCAA Tournament.”

As a junior last season, Guyn averaged 15.4 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.8 steals a game. He shot 49.6 percent from the field, including 39.8 percent from 3-point range.

Guyn said he has no second thoughts on his early commitment and he and his parents think the 49ers are the best choice.

“I remember on Sunday looking up to all the (NCAA) banners while I was in Halton Arena,” Guyn said. “I just said to myself, ‘I’d like to help add a few more.’ ”

I thought you said he looked around Halton Arena.

Welcome to Charlotte G, best decision you could've made!

He also saw alot of NIT Banners! Seriously who hangs a banner for the NIT?
Guyn was in elementary school the last time they added a NCAA banner.

How us his name pronounced? I am thrilled he wants to be a 49er and hope we an honor his intentions. The NCAA Tourney needs to be accomplished THIS year. He can help us repeat in his freshman year.

What difference does it make if someone make an anonymous post? Like Chris Beaver really tells us who you are. Why not post your address and phone number Chris? I could care less if someone is anonymous. I have no idea who you are (even with your name) and I doubt you would have any idea who I am even if I post my name. You may have one of the silliest arguments on the internet. Sincerely, Joe Smith.

One more thing...the banners in Halton are not that imperssive. You can try to sugarcoat this but facts are facts.

35 years of playing basketball and only 9 conference championships. Actually on 7 since the first 2 were while the school competed in NAIA. They have not advanced past the 2nd round in the NCAA tournament since 1977. The ONLY banner that has ANY credibilit is the 1977 Final Four. They have done very little since joining the A-10. Those my friends ARE THE FACTS! As a Charlotte Native I would love to see this program do better.

You guys can trash all you want but doesn't change the fact that the guy committed.

10:13---I hate to tell you this but about 75% of the teams in the country would LOVE to have Charlotte's bball history, especially the last 15-20 years!

And just cuz he committed doesn't change the fact that the team sucks!

10:48 Anon.....I posted FACTS. If you honestly think 75% of the teams in the country would trade places, please state why? I certainly do not see it.

I love "Wayin's" typical ACC troll response. Please report back to your job at Wal Mart.

8 of the last 15 NCAA tournaments is far better than the vast majority of the teams in the country.

Between Guyn, Bowden, Sherril, Sirin, Spears, Braswell, Jones, Briscoe and Green that number will go up over the next few years.

Lutz & company has done a good job getting recruits over the past year, now we'll see if they can turn it into wins.
