Nickerson commits to 49ers

UPDATE

E. Victor Nickerson, a 6-7 small forward from Norcross, Ga., committed to play basketball for the 49ers today.

Nickerson chose the 49ers over Colorado, Georgia Southern, DePaul and Wichita State. Nickerson was ranked 30th at his position by rivals.com.

Nickerson averaged 9.3 points and 5.7 rebounds for Norcross last season. He's one of four players on this season's team who will play Division I basketball.

"Charlotte runs an NBA-style pick and roll offense that appeals to me," said Nickerson in a statement. "Coach (Alan) Major has a good history of working with wings and I know he will help me develop on and off the court. I enjoyed my visits and really liked the diversity on the campus. I look forward to a great career at (Charlotte)."

Nickerson is Major's third commitment, joining big man Mike Thorne of Fayetteville and West Mecklenburg High shooting guard Terrence Williams. The 49ers are also pursuing point guard Elijah Carter of Brewster (N.H.) Academy.

Looking like our recruitment has improved under Major.

Who of these new players is highly rated? I don't see Major's recruiting being better than Lutz so far. guess we will have to wait and see.r

Nickerson is a top 100 player on ESPN, top 150 on Rivals.

Mike Thorne was getting a lot of attention from BCS conference teams.

Terrance Williams has had a very solid HS career and was a three star guy.

When was the last time Lutz had 3 commitments in the early signing period? I've followed the team for 6 years he didn't at all in that time frame.

Lutz would occasionally pull in a highly rated HS recruit, but it always came in the late signing period when the kid had academic questions and the big conference teams backed off.

Major hasn't even coached a game and has had us in the top 4 for several HIGH SCHOOL recruits. Looks like the JUCO train finally came off track.

Charlotte's recruitment is currently second in A10, behind Xavier's outstanding class.

Nickerson 95 points ESPN

Thome 91

Williams 86

Ryan, I like Major's recruting so far but Lutz brought in a lot of nice players (4 year and Jucos) over his 12 years as HC. Don't shortchange the postive things that Bobby did for the program.

NC STATE didnt want this guy...

Lutz definitely did bring in some nice players, but very few after we joined the A10.

His old recruiting pipelines were not sending players to play in the A10, so his recruiting fell apart and instead of having JUCOs compliment our 4 year guys, they became our go to guys. You can't compete in D1 at a high level when half your team is from a junior college.
