49ers lead nation in ERA

The 49ers' baseball team's ERA of 2.12 leads the nation, according to NCAA statistics released today.

Charlotte (31-9), which plays at Winthrop tonight, has two pitchers, Andrew Smith (1.34) and freshman Tyler Barnette (1.37) in the top 20 individually.

Barnette was named the Atlantic 10's freshman of the week for his complete game victory against Fordham on Sunday.

I'm planning on having a feature story in the Observer later this week on the 49ers' pitching staff -- and how it might be benefiting from an NCAA baseball rule change this season.

We aren't the only ones. Every pitching staff has benefited from the ban of the old bats - you know, the bats that were nothing more than rolls of hardened Reynolds wrap?

Our problem is the rest of the nation won't take us seriously. Even if we don't lose another game in the regular season, if we don't win the A-10 tournament, we won't be in the NCAAs, and that would be a shame. This is one of the best teams we have ever had.

Wouldn't it stand to reason that this is still an impressive feat, given that everybody's operating under the same rules?
