Sirin caught in numbers game?

Gokhan Sirin's decision to leave the Charlotte 49ers' basketball program probably came down to a simple numbers game for him.

Sirin, a 6-9 small forward, was somewhat of a one-trick pony for Charlotte. He could shoot the 3 (he made 43.1 percent of his shots last season), but that's about all he did (65 of his 75 total shots were from long-range). Plus, he was a defensive liability, and that's not going to cut it with coach Alan Major as he molds this program into something he wants.

Sirin averaged about 11 minutes per game, but those numbers dwindled  well below that late in the season. Except for two games that he played 13 minutes (vs. Richmond and Xavier), he averaged single-digit minutes down the stretch and didn't even get in against Saint Louis.

So, here's what Sirin was facing: He of course wasn't going to start next season ahead of Javarris Barnett. And some of the slew of new players coming in -- 6-5 transfer DeMario Mayfield, 6-4 Luka Voncina (he WILL be eligible next season), 6-7 freshman E. Victor Nickerson, 6-4 freshman Terrence Williams and 6-3 freshman Pierria Henry -- would have all competed with Sirin for spots on the perimeter, either at the 3 or 2 spot. And they're presumably more well-rounded players, too.

Here's a brief aside: Note the sizes of Mayfield, Williams and Henry and see if there's not a trend in what Major wants to do in the backcourt now. Returning starters Jamar Briscoe (5-10) and Derrio Green (6-2) don't fit that mold.

Leemire Goldwire wouldn't fit that trend either, but I'd take another Goldwire any day

Don't forget the incoming 6'10 freshman center Mike Thorne. That kid has the potential to be a huge asset to the program.

Good luck to Gokhan. I do like the kinda players Major is going after thouh.

David Scott you are clueless to what Major wants:

BIGGER definitely does not mean BETTER.

Tyler Lewis is 5'10 and Major recruited him from the minute he got the job right up until he committed to NCSU.

It appears the entire team could choose to leave the program and the CO would explain it all away by saying none of these players fit Major's long range plans.

The CO listed 4 or 5 players that will be able to shoot the long ball next year. Yet Lutz was critized for shooting the long ball. The only thing that has changed about this team is they now have a second rate coach.

These new guys are athletic have size and can play defense. They are not single talented shooters. They are D1 athletes and will be the future.

Wait a minute If I remember correctly Major was suppose to be this great teacher. He was suppose to be able to take a player and teach him the defensive fundamentals that would make a championship team.

It ain't looking good. Next year will be worse than this year. By the end of next year we will average just a few more than our women's team did this year.

How about people criticizing a coach who has only had one season under his belt a little more time? You people criticizing Major are the same type of people who criticized Coach K when he started, worked out for Duke by sticking with him.....and no, I am not saying Major is the next K, all I am saying is give him at least 3 seasons and if he is not showing improvement by then, by all means, blast away at that point.

Annonymous 1:03 AM: I'd like to be "average" next year. 10-20 is way below average!

Did not make the A-10 Tournament. Did not make the A-10 Tournament. The A-10 Tournament.

Some of you don't get it! When you don't make the A-10 Tournament that doesn't mean you are a bad team THAT MEANS YOU ARE ONE OF THE WORST TEAMS IN THE USA!

I don't blame the players for leaving. Who wants to be the orchestra on the Titantic?

I love how all you haters conveniently leave out that espn has us listed as one of the top 10 non-bcs recruiters in the country. I suppose you were too busy following the tarholes to catch that one. But seriously though, nice try.

I'm not worried one bit about next year. We will have a solid team. Major had to play with a short roster last year, but has a list of top recruits coming in next year. Our recruiting class is ranked top 10 among mid-majors by ESPN. All this talent will equal wins. IMO

Thank you for that ranking information. With that information we can now get excited about being ranked one of the top 200 teams in the NCAA next year.

WOW. I'll bet the ANON that keeps posting negativity is an App. State student who's bitter Charlotte has football. I wish the O would force people to put names in when posting so that we can see who this loser is. Show us you're not a chump and put a name in so we can see that it is the same punk over and over.
