A third key component to the 49ers' football coaching staff was added Thursday when Bruce Tall was named Charlotte's defensive coordinator.
Tall, who spent the last three seasons as Michigan's defensive line coach, joins offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen under head coach Brad Lambert. James Adams also was hired earlier this month as defensive position coach.
Tall, a long-time assistant under former West Virginia and Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez, has plenty of experience. He was the safeties coach at West Virginia from 2003-07 and was defensive line coach at Western Michigan in 2002.
He's also been at Cornell, Northeastern, Harvard and was defensive coordinator at Ohio Wesleyan -- his alma mater earlier in his career.
The 49ers play their first season in 2013. Lambert was able to hire Tall, Mullen and Adams this year, but will have to wait until 2012 to hire the rest of his staff.

GO NINERS!! Football is comin'!!
Welcome to Charlotte Coach Tall!
Go NINERS!!!!!
Great hire by the 49ers! They already have a head coach who was the leader of one of the worst defenses in the country, so this guy should fit right in! He was the defensive line coach on a terrible defensive team that ranked 94th in the country in Sacks last year. BRAVO!!
Seems like a great hire. Congrats, Charlotte.
Head coach from the ACC, OC from the Big East, and a DC from the Big 10. I am surprised we were able to pull so many BCS guys into one staff. This is a great beginning for a start-up program.
Go Niners!
Not so sure about the hire. I hope he does well, but Mich. defense has stunk the last couple of years. Oh well, Go Niners.
To the people bashing these hires b/c their former Division I teams sucked, give it a rest. These guys have top division talent/experience, but will be playing in the lowest level. I'm sure they'll be much better than the majority of coaches they go up against. Go to another board and bitch. If you're a true 49er fan, this is nothing but good news.
Playing in the lowest level? WTH? Charlotte will be playing D1. I know you meant well, but get a clue.
If you don't have anything nice to say...
Wow @ Anon. 7:53
It's good to know you have such little respect for the level of football your school will be playing in for the next 30 years. I can assure you that failure at the BCS level does not in any way mean they will be successful at the FCS level.

You're not bright if you think we started this football program to play FCS for more than 10 years.
