Goldwire getting used to Greek league

Former Charlotte 49ers star Leemire Goldwire, who led the men's basketball team in scoring last season and graduated in May, is now playing professionally in Athens, Greece, for a team called Egaleo AO Athens.

Egaleo plays in the first Greek League of professional basketball the A1 Ethniki.

I traded emails with Goldwire this week. The league he's in is playing "friendly games" -- another name for scrimmages -- and has a game upcoming with a team called Maroussi Athens, for whom Pat Calathes, a former star at Saint Joseph's, plays.

"I'm in Athens and my apartment is like five minutes from the gym. My apartment is OK. I've been to see players that play for other teams and their apartments are extremely nice," Goldwire said.

"I've been over here about two weeks now. We're ahead of Charlotte time by seven hours so my body clock is just getting adjusted to the time difference. I'm missing things like honey buns, banana pudding and even drive-thru restaurants."
