Jeffrey sets single season strikeout record

Charlotte junior Emily Jeffery, a former standout at Matthews Butler High, set the single season strikeout record in the 49ers' Charlotte’s 10-2 win over Elon Thursday in Game 1 of a doubleheader. Jeffrey's 14 strikeouts left her with 179 for the season and improved her record to 16-5 on the season.

Jeffery’s 14 strikeouts tied her single game record for the second consecutive game. Her 179 season Ks eclipse the record set last season by Katy Hackett.

Jeffery was perfect through 5 2/3rds innings in Game 1 before walking a runner and giving up a home run. Charlotte exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Jeffery tossed a complete game, allowing two runs on one hit. Jeffery has hit double digits in strikeouts nine times this season.

Elon topped Charlotte (22-11) 5-4 in Game 2.
