Derrio Green commits to 49ers

Derrio Green, a 6-foot, 180-pound combo guard who just completed his freshman season at Gulf Coast Community College in Panama, City, Fla., said Monday night he has chosen to play basketball for the Charlotte 49ers.

Green, who will have three years of eligibility, picked Charlotte over Georgia and George Washington. He made recruiting visits to Charlotte and Georgia over the weekend.

"Charlotte has great facilities, talented players, a great coach in coach (Bobby) Lutz and a great system - everything about it was a perfect fit," Green said Monday night. "I felt real comfortable when I made my visit. I am going to spend the next three years at a school and if I am I want to feel comfortable. I felt like I fit right in."

In one season at Gulf Coast, Green averaged 13.6 points and five assists per game. He shot more than 44 percent from 3-point range and better than 75 percent from the free throw line.

Green impressed scouts in this season's Florida Juco state basketball tournament, when he opened the tournament with a 38-point performance in an overtime win over Miami-Dade.

Green said he had already signed his national letter of intent and it would go out in Tuesday's mail. He said he was recruited by the 49ers' associate head coach, Rob Moxley, although he said current point guard DiJuan Harris was a big reason for his decision as well.

"He is such a great guy. I really wanted the opportunity to play with him," Green said. "With guys like Shamari (Spears), Phil (Jones) and (Chris) Braswell down low, all I'm going to have to do is just feed the ball to the post.

"A lot of guys in juco always say your first year in Division I is a learning year and your senior year is your best year. That's why I wanted to have three years to play."

Green said he got back from his recruiting visit to Georgia on Sunday evening and spent most of Monday talking over his decision with his parents. He notified Charlotte's coaching staff Monday evening. Green also said he plans to be on campus for the first and second summer sessions.

The 49ers still have one scholarship remaining for next season.

Look for the biggest turnaround in the NCAA for the 49ers next year. From last in the A10 tourney to 1st!

Green can flat out play. This is a HUUUGE land this late in the game

Athletic, can shoot and run the point. Perfect fit for what we need and he will definitely get important minutes at the 1 and 2. He sees how he'll fit with the team this coming year and the next couple based on his comments. Doesn't have to get major minutes right away.

Great job landing him after UGA got the last visit.

Taking a player away from that basketball pwerhgouse Georgia. UNCC will be insignificant as long as Judy Rose and Coach Munchkin are at the school.

Good news. We can use a scorer and I hope he will be able to give DiJuan a terrific break at point guard for 5-7 minutes each half. 28-30 minute of DiJuan will be terrific since he's all out energy!
Now, with Shamar Bowden and hopefully a more confident and consistent RaShad Coleman, we have scorers in the backcourt.

Great! Another juco to add to Lutz's resume. Can't get the big freshmen, so he has to settle for jucos. More of the same next year, fellas.

They should win 14-16 games next year.

He can't find a fax machine? Who uses regular mail to sent in a LOI now adays?

I think we can make the big dance next year and could reallly do some damage! Go Niners!

Incoming class includes: 2 freshman and one 3-Yr junior college kid and another 6-8 FR (Sirin) is about to commit. Fr Braswell is 6-8, top 100 player.

Freshman red-shirt who will likely start at SG (Bowden).

I don't understand the dislike of the Niners among Charlotte people. Makes no sense. Bunch of idiots.

Great get. Don't let the trolls get to you. They come out of moms basement long enough to eat, and then submerge back into their holes where they try and rip kids they know nothing about. Go Niners!! Welcome aboard Derrio!!

You cover recruiting???

ATTENTION 49ERS:
JUCOS DO NOT PLAY DEFENSE! THE SCORING NUMBERS YOU SEE HERE ARE INFLATED BECAUSE JUCOS DO NOT PLAY DEFENSE! JUCOS COME TO D-1 AND DO NOT KNOW HOW TO PLAY DEFENSE! JUCOS HAVE A BASKETBALL IQ LOWER THAN HS SOPHOMORE D-1 PROSPECT AND THUS THEY CANNOT LEARN DEFENSE! STOP RECRUITING JUCOS!!!

scotty,

you hype up every player that the niners have coming in since you been in school there.

He can probably play with the scrubs he's been playing against but no one has seen what he can do at the D1 level. Let's see how he does before you give him a BJ, ok?

Anonymus #1 juco players seems we have had some pretty good ones over time and this year see Mack Coley and Harris

Anonymus #2 Beating Georgia on a kid is good get. Knocking BCS schools off is like beating a heavy weight. No feel for the recruiting game.

Annoying #3 Jucos don't play defense. See Harris and Coley

Anonymus and Annoying #4 If anonymus and annoying put your name on your comment. If your a Davidson or Tarhole fan just say it. No guts no glory...

Welcome, your last name and the blood in your veins will soon match... GO GREEN!

Who gets the last scholarship?

Gohkan Sirin gets last schollie if he wants it. If not, I wouldn't be surprised to see them sit on it and wait on a D1 transfer like Spears

Man I hopr the Davidson pussycats bring their big boy pants and play us this year

Scotty is the biggest toolbag any collegiate sports program has ever seen.

This guy gives EVERY player a BJ, along with the color green. God willing he'd probably dye himself green, blow himself and all the 49ers in the same context.

Face it man, he's not some HUGE prospect. He's not even worth mentioning, honestly.

We're destined to shit finishes because we're a second tier school in NC when it comes to athletics. We're in a second tier conference, and we'll stay this way until something changes, someone goes.
