Can 49ers reverse things -- again?

This isn't the first time it's appeared this season might be spinning out of control for the Charlotte 49ers.

When they were blistered by Davidson by 14 points in early December, the 49ers had dropped to 4-6 and -- with Tennessee coming to town -- were wondering when the next win would come. Four straight victories ensued and the the winning streak seemed to establish the 49ers as a gritty, won't-lay-down-for-anybody team.

Well, the 49ers are back under .500 again (9-10 overall) after double-digit losses 73-54 against UMass on Wednesday's and Saturday's turnover-fest at Duquesne (a 83-67 loss). The 49ers have started 1-4 in the league.

Coach Alan Major knows what worked for his team during the winning streak -- victories at home against Tennessee and Wright State, then two on  the road against Mercer and Georgia Tech -- and he wants to get it back.

"We know we're better than what we've played recently, we've shown it," said Major. "I told them I want to get back this team that was running around the state of Georgia in late December. Skinning their knees, getting on the floor for loose balls, competing on every possession, those types of thing. Taking care of the basketball. We've shown that.

"We continue to believe in them. We're going to get back to work doing the things we have to do to be successful. You have to catch yourself, because as coaches you look at numbers and film and it's our nature to be critical. That's part of the profession, you choose the good and bad, the right and wrong. But kids are kids and you can't let them they get down and beat themselves up."

Is another winning streak possible? The 49ers play at Temple at Wednesday, where a victory would be as unlikely as beating, well, Tennessee. Then three straight home games await -- La Salle, Xavier and George Washington.

"We can recapture it," said Major. "I told them that. They've shown that in the past and I told them I believe they can do it again."

uncc is embarrassing.

They have to do it without Big Phil. Won't be easy.

With our loses we are thin in the front court. I true forward does not make a front court.

embarrassment is an understatement.

Major had an early advantage- opposing coaches didn't have tape on his schemes. Now the scouting report is out. Gotta LOL at the Niner fans who swear he can coach.

Add some losses and the haters are back. What a sorry bunch of fair weather fans we have. After watching the game it looks like the guys are not playing as a team anymore. I think the goal for the coaching staff this year should be not to lose the team. It will show against the teams in the same record range as Charlotte. With the lack of a true point guard and a true center the 49ers are up against the wall. If Major doesn't land a true point this off-season look for more troubles. Turn-overs are the biggest killer for this team and without that true point they will continue to struggle.

With all the injuries, and disqualifications of players, I think this group of players (the ones that are still out there busting their humps) is to be commended for their efforts.
We won't get a good grip on what Coach Major can do until he gets his recruits into the system and can play his style of ball. This team plays far better defense than any of Coach Lutz's teams ever dreamed of playing. It's not Major's fault that Lutz recruited a bunch of slow players.

Chris says: I know more about basketball than anyone. We will be just fine.

All considering I think Majors has done fine. Some people like to post but don't know the facts about the team. It's only his first year & playing with Lutz's recruits. It doesn't happen over night.I'm impressed with Alan Major. Some of you need to watch the Alan Major show on TWC 22.He speaks well & seems to have a grip on what he wants to do.Give it a couple of years. His defense will be superior down the road compared to the rest of the A-10!Once he lands a solid big man & tutors him we will be great!Just need a few solid recruiting classes.I think we will grab so locals.

Get ride of JUDY ROSE, her passive attitude towards Charlotte athletics in unacceptable.

If this university expects to be successful in the future, she does not need to be the athletics director.

Not knowing much about Judy Rose and hearing such a distaste for the Athletic Director from this blog I decided to do some research on her. I found a bio at:

http://www.artwithheartauction.com/assets/judyrosebio.pdf

If this is correct information I have to say that I am very impressed. Taking the 49ers from the Sun Belt to the A10 is good. Starting programs is good. Having success in most if not all programs is good. Generating capital to fund new facilities is good. I'm not sure why someone would be negative over someone that has done a great job at Charlotte. Add one more success with the addition of football.

Does anyone have any reasons that Rose is bad other than the firing of Lutz? And is it a bad thing to try to breath new life in a program that was starting to lose its luster?

The echo of a bouncing basketball in an empty gym can be deafening. Judas Rose gave up on the seniors last year and the seniors gave up on her this year!

If the seniors had not disappointed. If Majors had his own players. If Majors can recruit a guard. If Majors can recruit a big man. If Majors can teach them for two years (which means two more aweful year). If a bullfrog had wings!

We are now not good.

"And is it a bad thing to try to breath new life in a program that was starting to lose its luster?"

Is there anything wrong with destroying a program that at the beginning of the year "College Sports" magazine said had good potential and could be the surprise team of the A-10 this year, with four starters back?

What Judas Rose has done is akin to telling a marathon runner she can help them better compete if they will just let her replace their healthy hip with an untested artificial hip!

Judas gave up on the seniors last year and they gave up on her this year!

Dowless said...

Good comments, but I challenge you by saying "how full has the gym been in the last 3 to 4 years?" You guys say that Judy Rose gave up on the seniors, why? Maybe by denying transfers that is tough to swallow as a player, but would that have made the program more successful if she had allowed them? I think that Phil and Shamari will look back and regret their actions. It may not be this year or in 5 years, but when they grow a little more they will regret it. There are a lot of if's. Here is one more. What if you were in her shoes? Are you more qualified than her as a basketball player, coach, or athletic director to make a better decision. I think we will all have to wait for a bigger body of work before we can pass judgement on this decision.

I also don't see this as a destroyed program. You have one of the better recruiting classes in the conference next year. The current squad is buying into the teachings. Some of the players are showing better potential (Barnett). To stay with your marathon analogy, didn't the hip give way in the last race about 3/4 of the way in. Are you going to start a new race on the same hip that gave up on you or are you going to try to get a new hip. Yeah, the new hip is missing some screws and pieces, but the hope is when all of the pieces and screws are in place you can at least finish the race. That being a NCAA invite.

UNC-G will make it into the NCAA before Charlotte. This program has been destroyed. It's a joke! It's an embarrasment! It looks like a bunch of eighth graders running up and down the floor.

Judas Rose gave up on the seniors last year and the seniors gave up on her this year. Her callus actions have ripped the heart, soul and spirit out of this program (and this has nothing to do with Lutz. He's water under the bridge).

At least the bum hip got us 3/4 of the way there. This untested artifical hip can't even get us out of the starting box.

It time she instructed her staff to focus on their job instead of defending her all the time on the internet. Ohh! Ohh! I forgot she is their job! I forgot it's all about her!

Dowless..How true. It's amazing how fast the Negative Nancey's come out of their cheap seats to call names..pretty pathetic.

Are the Niners where they want to be..Obviously not. Are they rebuilding to get back on track...I think so. Does it suck they lost two of their senior starters this year in an already thin lineup..totally.

"bigger body of work” to form an opinion about JUDAS ROSE.! Are you oblivious to how many years she has been at Charlotte? And the downward spiral she has led this program.

She has been weighed on the balance and found wanting when it comes to her administrative skills (or lack thereof). She has destroyed this program. The students deserve better. The University deserves better. The community deserves better. The TEAM deserves better.

Now get back to work and stop defending your boss lady!

Based on most of the postees comments it appears that Judy Rose is to blame for Charlotte's unsuccessful run in the Atlantic 10. If I was her, I would get Charlotte out of the Atlantic 10 in the next couple of years. The 49ers don't seem to have any momentum when playing in this conference. If Charlotte goes to a conference like the Southern Conference, yes this would be step down, but at least they would win more games and the rivals would be more familar. Unless Charlotte is going to hire Bobby Knight they are never getting in the NCAA tournament much less win a conference title in this conference I don't care for.

32 turn overs in one game. 32 turn overs. 32 turn overs. Now that's cutting edge coaching! Let's just hope it doesn't turn into 49 turn overs. Get it 49ers!

Dowless said...

When I was watching the game not once did I see Coach Major dribble off his foot, make a bad pass, or get called for a charge.

I like the insight in moving down in Conference strength, but a lot of the other programs are holding their own. I would love to see the 5 year or 10 year plan for Charlotte Athletics. That would make for a good blog story. hint...hint...

Oh! So when a team is playing lousy, coaching has nothing to do with it. However, if the coach has two years to work with players (as has been suggested) he can magically elevate the players to a higher level of play! Even though as has been suggested here, coaching has nothing to do with the quality of play during the game.

Geeeezz!

Beam me up Scotty, there’s no intelligent life down here!

3:52 and 4:29.......horribly stupid comments by both. Charlotte has been in MANY NCAA tourneys and they will get back, they are simply in a down period right now. It is the worst 5-6 year period (no NCAAs) for mens bball that the program has suffered in over 25 years. They'll be back.

It wasn't 32 turnovers either. It was 26.

Some people are so dumb. Judy Rose sucks. She should have hired (Bobby Knight seriously?) Coach K. That is the ONLY way we will ever win a game again in school history. Even though he wasn't looking for a job she should have snatched him up out of Cameron Indoor, kidnapped him, and forced him to coach here....buuuut since she didn't she must be burned at the stake right? Especially since all of her hires are so terrible. None of our sports teams have won in years. Baseball isn't predicted to win the A-10 or anything.

Oh, and Major doesn't know what he is doing. We only beat number 7 Tennessee and GT. I forget, how many times did Bobby beat GT?...oh wait he didn't. But at least we beat them at home...oh wait, no on that account too. So Major must have told Shamari to be a d***, tore up Lukas transfer papers, pushed Dew down a set of stairs, and stole Phil's econ notebook causing him to fail! Why aren't we winning? we have our best walk-on out there?

Hey I know, since uncc is soooo incredibly embarrassing that we should just shut the whole thing down and let students from chapel hill take over "UNC at Chapel Hill in Charlotte" or UNC-CHC. Come on guys! We should have set TWC arena on fire with all the embarrassing Charlotte fans in there. They don't even deserve to live.

...And this is all thanks to Judy Rose...what a terrible person.

PS get a life trolls...take your degree and burn it because you don't deserve it and never will.

26 turn over’s in one game. OK! A turn over every 1 minute and 50 seconds of the game. With each team having 45 seconds to shot the ball that means each team can average about 27 shots per game? Which could mean that they turned the ball over as many times as they shot the ball? Which = one ugly game, divided by one Judas Rose, + an inexperienced coach, - no fans, - fan support <Judas Rose’s ego

Anonymous said...

11:42.......wow, you really know your college bball.......45 second shot clock and all......lol

Anonymous said...

One thing's for sure wheather he/she used a 45 second clock or a 35 second clock for his/her figures that was one ugly game Charlotte played.

The team has been destroyed.

And Judy or Judas (which ever you want to call her) Rose has destroyed the team and needs to go.

And that's the word all over the campus!

Anonymous said...

7:24 just give it up.....its very obvious that you don't have a clue about which you are talking.

Dowless said...

Wow! That's the word all over campus. That would imply that you are a student. Are you a 6th or 7th year. I'm disappointed to see that the standards have dropped since I was there. Just kidding... I'm sure you have other skills that don't include following sports.
