The Charlotte 49ers golf team opens play Friday in the Atlantic 10 Championship at the Mission Inn Resort in Howie-in-the-Hills, Fla., and looking for their fourth consecutive title. The 49ers are coming off consecutive top eight finishes at the NCAA Championships.
Penn State, which won five straight A-10 titles from 1986 to 1991, is the only other program that has won at least three straight A-10 golf championships.
Charlotte will be led by senior Stefan Wiedergruen and junior Corey Nagy who share the 49ers' team stroke average lead. Both have taken exactly 1914 strokes and are tied with identical 73.6 stroke averages.
Wiedergruen, who spent time as the nation's top-ranked golfer in the fall of 2007, and Nagy, who was named honorable mention all-America in each of his first two seasons, will try to lead a young team looking for its first tournament victory of the season. Charlotte averaged five tournament wins over the previous three seasons.
