Is there a future 49er among them?

Future 49er?
Some potential candidates to replace 12-year Charlotte coach Bobby Lutz gleaned from sources, Web sites and best-guesses:

Joe Dooley, Kansas assistant: Big-time recruiter for Jayhawks also spent four seasons as head coach at East Carolina (1995-99).

Dalonte Hill: Kansas State assistant: Former 49ers player and assistant coach has proven a good recruiter but how about the Xs and Os?

Brad Brownell, Wright State coach: Former UNC Wilmington coach led Seahawks to Colonial Athletic Association titles and NCAA appearances in 2003 and 2006.

Fran McCaffery, Siena coach: Has taken three different schools to the NCAA tournament and spent six seasons as coach at UNC Greensboro.

Mike Young, Wofford coach: Leading the Terriers to their first NCAA appearance this season after beating Appalachian State in Southern Conference tournament final in Charlotte.

Don't think so. The hire will be from out of the blue, an unexpected one.
Let's hope Dubois doesn't blow this one. It's just as important as the overdue football coach hiring.

Charlotte needs to bring back Melvin Watkins. I am sure Coach Watkins wants to be a head coach again and did a great job when he was the coach. You can go back home again and when Coach Watkins was the head coach his teams had a certain swagger about them that is different from the team now. If you hire a young guy he might stay 2 or 3 years and move to a BCS school. I would hope that Coach Watkins would come back and prove to everybody that he is glad to be back and would take Charlotte to a higher level.

Looks like someone's been on NinerNation.Net

We need someone young with fire in the belly. We need someone that is going to ruffle feathers.

It is obvious that the Coach for Charlotte is Roy Williams. Rumor was Roy wanted to come here in 82 when Mike Pratt was fired, but wouldn't under Clyde Walker.

Come home Roy, we will love you in Charlotte regardless. We will even give you your own bank building.

If they can get Brad Brownell, they should grab him. He's doing the same thing at Wright State that he did at UNCW. He is a great young coach who recruits and works extremely hard and is good with the X's and O's.

coach steve joyner would be a good canidate.

Ernie Kent. He is going to be fired at Oregon. Been to the "big dance" a couple of times. Why not?

Bring Dalonte... AND his recruiting class

Billy Gillispe

Should have given Moxley a chance. He is one of the best recruiters in the country.

Cedrick Maxwelp

BRING BACK MELVIN WATKINS!!!

Niner National said...

If Moxley is such a great recruiter, then why are we left until summer before the season starts before we fill our scholarships? Moxley targets guys that are unrealistic for the program, strikes out 9.5 times out of 10 and then we are left with the trash nobody else wants, JUCOs, and transfers.

I like the idea of Mike Young, but if we can't get him, his assistant Mark Prosser should be considered, it's in his genes.

I'm sure this job is viewed as a huge step up for any of the coaches in the Southern Conference. I won't be surprised if we consider the coaches at App State or Wofford.

Anonymous said...

screw the dalonte hill idea...the is guy is a total money hungry trader. walked out on lutz to go with huggins and took beasley with him in the process...screw the melvin watkins idea as well...the guy had his shot at UNCC and sold out to go coach at TX A&M? they had a crappier program then we did, totally sold out for the money. What makes everyone think he wouldn't do the same again?

Duke Assistant coach Wojo....talk about firing up a team. Would love to see what he can do.

Jerry Wainwright?

Will Burkholder is my choice but Wojo would be cool too.

John Groce at Ohio University would be a great choice to make a run at. Led them to the NCAA Tournament in only his 2nd season. Was asst around here at NC St and also at A10 member Xavier

Bring back Jeff Mullins. I'll bring the chewing gum.

Duggar Baucom, VMI. He's a Charlotte native and UNC-Charlotte alum, and has a proven coaching track record. Asst under McKillop at Davidson, Asst at WCU and excellent recruiter. Head coach at Div 2 Tusculum - turned the program around, won conference and took them to post season play, Head Coach at VMI, team has set numerous records in Div 1, although a very difficult school to recruit for. Worth a look.

One more year like this one and UNC will GIVE you Roy boy!

Anonymous said...

I know he comes with baggage but Morgan States Todd Bozeman would be the perfect hire. Charlotte is a goldmine and he would be able to get big time recruits to come, hopefully the legal way. He has shown at Morgan that he can compete as well as beat the big boys(Maryland and Arkansas), also is able to land the big names. Want happen though ACC schools would be terrified he is on the block.

Chris Dwiggins!! He shot a three pointer once and the crowd went nuts.

DeLonte Hill? Bring that scummy clown in here and the Alumni Association will never see another dime from me.

Anonymous said...

Someone needs to update this page...Benny Moss is not the Coach at Wilmington anymore...

Anonymous said...

Herb Sendek, its a done deal.

Anonymous said...

supenMelvin Watkins.
I agree if Delonte Hill is even considered, not another penny of my money would go to this school !
Moxleys a recruiter ????????? When ????????

Anonymous said...

Benny Moss. He's not doing nothing........

Anonymous said...

The next coach should Orlando Early. He was at Charlotte in the early 2000's when they had great recruiting classes and competed against a dominate Cincinnati team. He is currently at UL-Monroe and is a former conference coach of the year. He has strong ties to Charlotte and would do a tremendous job.

dooksucks said...

If they hire Wojo then they wont get another penny from me. Wojo is a little troll, a teachers pet that everybody hates except for all the yankees that make up the majority of Duke (aka University of New Jersey - Durham) students and alum.

Anonymous said...

Bobby Cremins is scheduled to speak with Judy Rose on Thursday. I think that would be a good match.

Anonymous said...

To Anonymous at 8:34...
There is a reason Benny Moss is "not doing nothing".

Go for someone "outside" of the program

Anonymous said...

Is there any confirmation for this Cremmins meeting?

Anonymous said...

They need to hire Byron Dinkins or Cedric Maxwell. I was very young when me moved to Charlotte and these guys would be an asset for sure. But we all should know there is so much politiking going on that whoever they bring will have to buy a lot of chapstick and kiss a lot of @$$!!!

SAD BUT TRUE!!!!

Anonymous said...

IN case you do not know who Byron Dinkins or Cedric Maxwell are.....let me enlighten you....naysayers.

They were two of the best player that EVER played at UNCC. Byron had a 3-point shot that could bring a chill to all that were sitting near and
Cedric had the finese and height to play defensive against any player and used to smack their shots to downtown Charlotte!!!

So what are you waiting for Chancellor.........do you want VICTORIES or not????

I know you have plenty of $$$$$$$$

Anonymous said...

Davidson's McKillop.

Anonymous said...

They hire a dookie, I'm giving back my diploma.

Dooley (just turned down a $600,000 offer from ECU), Hill (one of the highest paid assistant coaches in college basketball, thanks to Michael Beasley), Brownell, and McCraffery all have a higher salary than Lutz so it will be difficult to hire them for the right money, continue to pay Lutz, and by the way fund a football program.

Research the name Donnie Tyndall, Morehead State University. One of the top recruiters in the country as an assistant, and turned Morehead's program completely around in only 4 years, including back-to-back 20+ win seasons and NCAA tournament win. He's a coach whose salary will not break the bank and will be pivotal in recruiting the talent in N.C. to stay in-state.

Anonymous said...

Matt Doherty? He can recruit for sure and would excite the fan base though likely alienate some of the carolina haters out there- I think he would be good though, fairly young and energetic, very eager to prove himself after the debacle in chapel hill and able to get players- what do yall think?

Ghoul said...

They never would have fired Bobby if they had not already spoken to someone, or that person's reps through one of those coach recruiting companies. They already have their man, they are just waiting for the right time to announce it.

Anonymous said...

Matt Doherty? He's not even doing well at SMU. They are looking to fire him! WHy would we want him??

Anonymous said...

Brad Brownell? Are you kidding me? How about Jerry Wainraight if you are looking at old UNCW coaches.

Anonymous said...

haha jerry wainwright literally cant even walk right now...

Would like to see Jay Bilas come on board and rise to the challenge since he always had good things to say about our program. Probably not enough money to get him away from ESPN. A guy can dream, can't he?

Anonymous said...

Either way Charlotte needs to jump on a hire quickly because UCF, who has a similar student demographic, is also in need of a new coach. UCF is in a better conference and has the ability to recruit the same talent as other Florida schools. Charlotte has to compete(for talent)against much tougher in-state schools.

Anonymous said...

Duke Assistant Chris Collins! He will be a terrific head coach somewhere -- might as well be here.

jamie said...

Fran McCaffery would be the right choice.

Anonymous said...

Bobby Cremins coming here? That would be a slam dunk. I'd start buying tickets.

Anonymous said...

DeLonte Hill makes $420,000 per year. No way Charlotte should pay that for a coach.

Anonymous said...

Dalonte Hill has already dump Charlotte twice. The first time we he transferred to Bowie State and the second when he jumped ship to follow thay dirt bag Huggins.

Anonymous said...

Ryan Odom, Dave Odom's son at Virginia Tech

Anonymous said...

Buzz Peterson. Not my choice but they are talking to him.

Anonymous said...

Want a up and comer? Someone who will someday make some school and AD glad they gave him his first shot?Gerald Haase at UNC.

Anonymous said...

Who is Gerald Haase?

Anonymous said...

I don't think we should go after Wojo at Duke. All he has ever done is win. Let's lower our sights a little...we don't want to win too many games too fast. Let's try to find a UNCC alum or somebody that has some obscure Charlotte connection that has bounced from job to job.

Anonymous said...

Dino Gaudio!!!!

Anonymous said...

I don't think getting Chris Collins or Wojo is a horrible idea. They have name recognition. I am not a Duke fan, but coach K is in my list of top college coaches of all time. Cremins is a good coach, but I think we need to go younger that will be able to stay with the program longer. oh yea and DO NOT HIRE Dalonte Hill.

Anonymous said...

You are a 6 ft. 10 inch high school superstar ready to pick a school to play for.

Do you play for the school coached by Roy Williams or do you play for the school coached by 2 time NBA Champion, 1981 NBA Finals MVP Cedric Maxwell?

If you were smart you would choose Cedric Maxwell.

Charlotte would probably win the 2014 National Championship once all of Maxwell's recruits were in place. Just the name Cedric Maxwell alone will attract the greatest high school players in the country.

But the Charlotte athletic administration is too stupid to do something smart like hire Cedric Maxwell.

If the Charlotte athletic administration had any brains, they would have already had a football program and would be in the Big East waiting for the next ACC expansion.

4:07-----UCF is NOT in a better league! Not even close.

Anonymous said...

What do you think of William and Mary's coach, forgot his name. They looked good last night against Chapel Hill. Sure they shot about 40 threes but that's because they're not athletic (according to the sport's analysts last night).

Steven Michael said...

6:54..its Jerod Haase. 9:02am they would pick Roy Williams everytime, he is a much bigger name in college basketball and a PROVEN great coach. Most younger people don't even know who cedric maxwell is. You don't hire somebody just because they were a niner great and had a successful playing career, you hire them because they can coach, jesus man. Three names I would throw out and 2 have already been mentioned would be, Tony Shaver who is William and Mary's coach, Buzz Peterson, and Archie Miller(Sean Miller's brother). They all come from good coaching pedigrees and 2 are proven head coaches.

Anonymous said...

Chris Collins or Steve Wojo, they would be great coaches for uncc. There young and there ready to prove something already. I would also like to say screw Delonte Hill he stabbed uncc to many times for me to even consider him as a head coach here.

Anonymous said...

Melvin Watkins had his chance and burned that bridge. I think they should Brad Brownell a look, he did a great job at UNCW and has done well at Wright State.

TC

Unknown said...

If they want to be know as a legimate program in college basketball, this city, and for all the fans it would make sense to hire someone with a name. Billy Gillepsie is the right for the job or Mark Gottfried(former coach at Alabama). Both guys can recruit and they are looking to start over in their careers. Gillepsie knows he should never left A&M for Kentucky and Gottfried did a decent job at Alabama. I think if they are trying to move the program to a higher level anybody besides these guys would be a waste of time and they all compare to Lutz. No way Roy is leaving Chapel Hill and Wojo is definitely not a perfect coach to compete in his first job and do well in the A-10.

Todd Bozeman at Morehead State would be a great hire. He has coached at a high level (Cal) and recruited top talent (Jason Kidd). He has paid his dues for his mistakes and has shown to be a great asset. Not sure why Moxley was not given a shot, a guy who single handedly recruited 90% of the top talent at Charlotte in the past 8 years. He is the second best recruiter in the Maryland/DC area behind Dalonte Hill. Remember Rodney White, Demon Brown? Also he recruited Grevis Vasquez to Maryland in his only year there.
