Update on Charlotte 49ers coaching search

One new candidate has emerged while another seems more and more unlikely as the search for a new men's basketball coach for the Charlotte 49ers moves into its third week.

Xavier associate head coach and former Wake Forest assistant Pat Kelsey confirmed Monday through a third party that he has not been contacted by the 49ers regarding their coaching vacancy. Xavier's season is over so presumably if Charlotte were going to contact Kelsey they would have done so already.

However, a source close to Syracuse's primary basketball booster organization, The Hardwood Club, said Monday night the 49ers have contacted Orange assistant coach Mike Hopkins about Charlotte's head coaching job.

Syracuse athletic department officials did not immediately return a request for comment on Sunday.

Hopkins just completed his 15th season as an assistant to longtime Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim after finishing his playing career with the Orange in 1993. He came to Syracuse from Mater Dei High in Los Angeles and had a brief professional career in the CBA and in Europe before pursuing coaching.

Kelsey was an assistant at Wake Forest, not NC State. Must be confusing him with Sean Miller.

highly doubt Hop would leave his coach in waiting status at a premier Big East school to coach Charlotte.

Wow, does UNCC view itself that low to potentially hire a guy who will coach 5-7 years then bolt back to Syracuse when Beiheim retires?

I'm sure he can't wait to live in beautiful Charlotte, NC, and coach a team with such a rich basketball history as the 49ers.

I see the envious "I was too stupid to attend college" Walmart fans are already on here making stupid comments about the 49ers.

Even with their woes in the past 5 years, the Niners have still been to post season 14 of the past 20 seasons.

I think this coach or Kelsey are both better picks than Buzz Peterson, who I hear is definitely interested in this position.

Well Xavier has hired coaches that stay for 5-7 years than bolt and that program seems to be doing very well with recruiting players and coaches.

Without a doubt Duggar Baucom is the the 49ers guy. IT woudld be an absolute travesty to not consider him for the job. This guys is one the smartest and hardest working coaches in the game. Just look at his track record and history especially while at Tusculm and VMI, not the most attractive schools for recruiting but he has been able to do the impossible. You talk about a recruiter... he has two former player in his short carreer playing in the NBA - his most most renound recruit while an assitant at Western Carolina, Kevin Martin who is starter with Houston Rockets and Reggie Williams, VMI who just signed with the Golden State. Baucom being a native from Charlotte, and graduate from UNCC, Baucom has all the recruiting knowledge and relationships in the Charlotte area and the region's hot bed of talent. With that said, Baucom would have an immediate impact for the 49ers and build a powerhouse program UNCC should be. He is the complete package this town and school needs!

The 49ers should consider Nolan Richardson, the former head coach at the University of Arkansas who won an NCAA title in '94 when Charlotte hosted the Final Four.

Bring back Benny Moss from Wilmington, he ain't doing nothing these days.

I see that someone is talking about himself when he says the walmart--too stupid to go to college crowd--is chiming in...BTW Buzz would not take a step down position like Charlotte when he can build his own big time program in Boone since ASU is going FBS after the moratorium ends next year.

It would be interesting to see what Pat Kelsey could do with the 49'ers program. He's certainly not getting a promotion anytime soon at Xavier.

How about Mike Jarvis of Florida Atlantic. You have a head coach that has been in the Big East and has a proven record. There is no doubt that he can recruit and build. Tommy Amaker at Harvard would also be a nice fit.
