Updates on Charlotte 49ers coaching search

Some updates Wednesday in the Charlotte 49ers' search for a new men's basketball coach:

-Jim Marchiony, associate athletics director for external relations at Kansas, declined to answer whether Charlotte has sought permission to speak with Kansas associate head coach Joe Dooley, about the 49ers' job. Marchinoy said it is KU's policy to leave the public answer to that question to the school seeking permission. Charlotte athletics director Judy Rose has said she will make no public comments regarding the hiring process.

-Mark Gottfried, former coach at Murray State and Alabama and now an ESPN analyst, has spoken to Charlotte officials about the 49ers' coaching vacancy, a source said Wednesday. Through an ESPN spokesperson, Gottfried declined to comment when asked if he had interviewed for the job. Gottfried was 210-132 at Alabama, including five consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament.

-As of Wednesday, Charlotte officials have not sought permission to speak with Xavier associate head coach Pat Kelsey about the job, a source close to the Musketeers program confirmed. However, Xavier is still playing in the NCAA tournament.

-Charlotte officials have also not sought permission to speak with Appalachian State coach Buzz Peterson, ASU confirmed. However, like Kelsey, Peterson's school is still playing, hosting Pacific in the CollegeInsider.com tournament on Thursday.

This could be a massive step up for Buzz Peterson (from 21st best conference to the 6th best conference; although most years the A10 is the 7th or 8th ranked conference.

Step up or not, I'm not sure if the Niners need to consider Buzz for this job.

Hire Mark Gottfried. He was a good coach at Alabama and they have not done anything since he left. Not sure what happened to him there but he's quality and he's young.

Here's a radical idea for Phil "Yadda Yadda" DuBois: upgrade your pool by making it a combo AD/hoops HC slot. That is a two-fer -- you lose Judy Rose and convince a PROVEN coach to move to more responsibility, less interference.

It is unclear why UNCC needs a full-time AD given the overall small footprint.

Better still, at the end of year you could upgrade your FOOTBALL search by letting folks know that Judy Rose will NOT be making the hire.

JAT...you are a moron.

Good call, JAT. Rose should be the one that's outta there. And with football on the horizon...

Not sure that dual roles works, but, Mark Gottfried would be a definite move in the right direction. He won alot in a football state and conference, and went to the tournament every year.

Mark Gottfried left Alabama after he ran Ronald Steele into the ground. I would be willing to bet that this had made it nearly impossible for Gottfried to recruit. http://www.examiner.com/x-2159-College-Basketball-Examiner~y2009m1d22-The-unfortunate-case-of-Alabamas-Ronald-Steele

Step up for Buzz Peterson? Yeah right. Get over yourself UNCC. ASU more than holds their own against UNCC. Your program hasn't done anything the past few years. If you did, Cheap Suits Lutz would still be there.

JAT - Judy Rose is no moron. She's doing a great job and I'm 99% sure you know nothing of the ins and outs of her job and what it takes/what is being done to make all of our programs successful - and, in that case, everything you're stating is based on perception. Perception can be a bad thing JAT, a very bad thing.

No one knows whats going on with this deal - everything we've read is speculation. Luckily we have folks like Jim who will make calls so we can get an idea of who has and hasn't been contacted based on their current university's reply. Other than that, no one has any basis to say whether or not we are doing a good job. Have a little faith. Everyone said they'd never have the guts to fire bobby and they did that - you don't know who they're talking to. What we do know is that not making the NCAA tourney wasn't an option any longer - they won't hire anyone who they don't fully believe can do that.

Brandon Jolly...Right up I-77 at Lake Norman High School. Young, energetic, and fresh off a 4A State Championship with a bunch of "rich white kids." Not a splash, but a solid choice.

I've seen the Jolly kid coach. He knows his stuff and knows what he is doing. Still a little young and lacking experience, so probably not a good choice for a head coaching job. But he would be a heckuva choice for an assistant coach.

Buzz Peterson tried moving up a few years ago. This is his 2nd stint at App. Before he left App once he took them to the NCAA tourney, went on to Tulsa for a year, then Tennessee before dropping back down to Coastal Carolina, finally coming back to App. Not exactly a coach who needs to move up, since last time it didn't work. Since takin App to the NCAA tourney in 2000, he hasn't been back. I'm not a UNCC fan, but they need someone better than Peterson.

A-10 & ACC Comparison
(1) Conference (A-10) Rated #7 (ACC) Rated # 6

(2) Sweet Sixteen (A-10) one team left (ACC) one team left

(3) NIT (A-10) one team left (ACC) one team left

(4) Distant between teams (A-10) Charlotte – Richmond 311 miles
(ACC) Miami – FL ST 500 miles /BC – Mary 450

(5) Recruiting (A-10) Heart of Conference is in middle of 50% USA population NE players are guaranteed 20 games in 4 years, within 2 hrs of their family

(ACC) Two teams get the McD players guaranteeing them one game in four years in front of their family Carolina kids sit the bench so the two schools can protect their McD image

Actually the A10 has 2 teams left in the NIT, Rhode Island and Dayton.

it says a lot when a terribly down year for the ACC is still better than the A-10. get that mess out of here.

Anonymous said...

If the ACC ever offered Charlotte an invitation, you high and mighty 49ers fans would crawl over hot coals to accept it.

Anonymous said...

Of course the ACC is usually better than the A-10. Just not this year. Maybe 49er fans wouldn't hate the ACC so much if the conference hadn't destroyed Conference USA and UNC would play us. As it is, all ACC teams are the enemy. Can't wait to see Dayton or Rhodie punk the heels. Wish we had gotten the chance/

Anyone comparing A-10 to the ACC in basketball should never post anything ever again..... ever.

Judy has overseen a great deal of improvement in facilities at the U. Once the tennis facility is renovated in a few years Halton will be the oldest thing on that campus sports wise and its just 14 years old and has undergone 2 major renovations. Judy is able to reach into some deep pockets of important donors and pull out lots of plums. My concern with Judy now is that she has never ran a football program. I'd feel a lot better about her remaining AD if we hired someone with legit football skills to become AAD for football. As for men's basketball, I expect the coach to clearly be better than Bobby, not some no name.

How about Dell Curry? Experience, Name Recognition, Character..maybe not as much coaching experience but he knows the game and apparently he knows how to teach the game based on his kids.

A Few More ACC Comparisons

Basketball

Over the last 5 years among the (6 BCS) conferences: Number of teams in the Sweet sixteen, the ACC is in a distant 6th place

During the same period in the Final Four between the ACC and Conference USA it is almost even

This year between A-10 and ACC they are about even, so the ACC is closer to the A-10 than the Big 10

Football

Everyone knows the ACC is a joke, falling behind the MWC & WCC. The ACC is closer to Conference USA than the SEC or Big 10

If the ACC is wise they are sitting behind closed doors planning for when the Big 10 takes BC & Maryland during the next round of conference expansion

Cedric Maxwell wants the job. I say let him have it.....

Buzz Peterson is the perfit fit for our job. He is from the State of NC and will recruit the top players from the our State. He is great at salemanship and will keep the alumini happy. Buzz knows how to coach and will get the best from his players. I saw this in the SOCON Tourney. He has over 200 wins under his belt with an NIT Championship. Buzz Peterson did do a middle of the road job at TENN, I think any Coach that goes through a tough situation learns from it and is a better Coach for going through tough times. Peterson is a Seasoned Coach and Players will want to play for him. He seems to me to be the best fit for the Job. Thats what we need - The best fit for UNCC

Dear Jeff Mullins,

Please beg Duke Associate Head Coach Steve Wojciechowski to take the reins in Charlotte so we can win like we did when you and Melvin ran the team.

Thank you for your time.

ASU doing great in socon is comparable fordham doing a horrible job in the A-10 and ECU sucking in CUSA, ASU is a joke in basketball, there not even on radar for most schools in the mid-majors confrences and there definetly not a threat to the BCS schools.

ASU has to compare themselves to a down charlotte to make there program feel better, but if they ever played a school, like my team Xavier, they would be laughed out of the building before the 1st half. Charlotte is a much more threatening team to top programs now, and in the future, than ASU ever was, is, or ever will be. I know it, Charlotte knows, and even the pathetic ASU fans deep in their heart know it.

Ditto.

As a UNC fan I find that the UNCC program is below average at best most of the time, but its nothing compared to how bad App State is. They play in the Socon conference, that says it all.

I respect Buzz, but the only reason he does such a good job as head coach at App state is because how low their conference is and how low the schools program is.

I think UNCC has the potential to be a strong conference in Basketball, and in fotball if they get it. They might be a formitable team in the big east one day if they play their cards right. UNCC shows it has a lot of potential to be a power house. App state is just another dead end in college sports.

Thats a lot coming from a guy who's favorite team is currently playing in the NIT. Four McDonalds all americans and they still diden't make the NCAA tounement, unlike Duke who who is currently dominating at the moment.

However I do have to agree with you on App State being a joke. I have a friend who is currently going their and he is always bringing up their three Socon titles. I chuckle every time. If they want to show there a good conference why dont they try to win a National title from a legitimate confrence that actually matters.

At least UNCC has been to a final four in the NCAA tounement, what has App done that actually matters? And no beating Michiagan does not count, they were overated that year and bad teams do tend to beat decent teams every once in a while. Try posting something currently instead of reliving the past.

peace!

"Try posting something currently instead of reliving the past."

That's what you just did when you mentioned UNCC participation in the Final Four. How long ago was that?

I would say in head to head meetings ASU has held its own. I don't think anyone at ASU thinks the SoCon is the equivalent of the A-10. But success at a lower level doesn't mean that it can't it translate into success at a higher level. I assume you don't think any current coach at a lateral or higher level school is coming to UNCC. If so, dream on.

Keep your hands off our coach, UNC-C! "The Buzz is Back" and we intend to keep him!

Melvin Watkins is obviously the best person in the country for the job. Bobbie's early successes were largely due to keeping Melvin's recruits. I of course doubt he would take the job but it would be great if he did. What about Rob Moxley? I think he was probably a better recruiter than Bobbie and a substantial part of the teams overall success when they were still winning.

As a former undergrad at duke and current Grad student at Duke, I could care less who UNCC gets as long as it’s not Collins or Wojo, those two could do so much better than UNCC. As for App State, their athletics program is trash and always will be. UNCC more than likely doesn’t take App seriously, the tarholes don't take App seriously, and Duke sure as hell thinks Apps athletic program, and there school in general, is a joke and a complete waste of time.

I highly recommend you learn this motto which is a testament in time.

Duke >>>>>>>>>> UNC >>> UNCC > ECU >>>>>>>>>> App state.

Learn it, live it, love. This knowledge will benefit you for years to come, and you will thank me one day when you look back on this life changing day and wonder how you ever lived without it. But don't worry, no thanks are required. Knowing I showed a former App fan the truth and bringing him/her to the correct way, the Duke way, is all the thanks I need.

Who says Duke fans are arrogant jerks? I just don't see where they get the reputation...

Hey Dookie

ECU may not be as strong as Dookie or UNC be we have held our own against UNCC. Hopefully with are new head coach we can finally become the basketball team were suppose to be. We shouldn't be compared to low level teams like fordham and App State. Our school is better than that and it should continue to that
