What about Phil Ford as 49ers coach?

Read why Charlotte Observer NBA writer Rick Bonnell thinks the Charlotte 49ers should check out Charlotte Bobcats assistant coach Phil Ford as their next head coach.

R U Crazy! Phil has no head coaching experience. Let him go to UNC and resurrect that program. Then when he gets some experience maybe we will consider him. We don't need UNC's crums. And another thing! You don't fire a coach that has a winning record, been to the big dance on several occasions and replace him with someone that has never been a successful head coach.

You need to worry less about UNC and concentrate on learning how to spell the word "crumb". Your ignorance makes all us true 49ers look BAD! ROFL

Come on folks. Bobby Lutz did not have head coaching experience when he was hired, so don't make that a qualification for his replacement.

As for his "winning record and going to the big dance," raise your expectations. The 49ers have performed at a mediocre level and did not win when it mattered.

Phil has two (2) DWI convictions. NO WAY we want that loser!

This is NOT the Carolina way! Pathetic!

It would be nice to see Phil finally get his shot. His DWI convictions were almost 10 years ago. I certainly think that UNCC could do worse (and probably will) than hiring Phil Ford as their next choice.

Phil, if you're reading this, I think there is an opening at East Carolina.

East Carolina already has another loser UNC-CH coach at the helm: Jeff Lebo. Super! Maybe Matty Dough wants a new job? How about Roy's unemployed banker son?

Bobby had plaenty of head coaching experience at Pfieffer. Almost 10 years.

If Ford is such a good coach, then why did UNC get rid of him???

Great journalism from the Observer as always, no real scoop on what the 49ers are doing, just more recirculating of the UNC garbage pool.

What is Serge Zwicker doing these days?

Show me something Phil Ford has done as a head coach of anything. There's nothing to this aside from a wreckless suggestion.

I'll take the cat from Northern Iowa all day long. If not him, empty the coffers for someone who will make a difference and play a keen style that will interrupt the city's thought process of the stay home and watch ACC on TV crowd.

We have to get a difference maker who will coach a compelling style. Period. We had a great coach in Lutz and people stopped watching. We need the next great scheme. Be it Loyola-Marymount of the 90s or the all white Princetone-Cornell style.

There's much more wrong with charlotte basketball than Lutz. He was a good man, a winner and he did average in the A-10. And, no one cared. Except those of us, 2000 (sadly) strong, he decided average was not good enough anymore.

I'm not a tarheel fan, but I don't think Phil Ford is such a horrible name for consideration. He may not have been a head coach before, but spent many years coaching under Dean Smith. The only reason he was let go was because that dumbo Matt Daugherty let the whole staff go to bring in his own. We all see how that worked for him. I am not saying I want Phil Ford as the next coach, but there is no reason to respond so negatively of the man when he has a wealth of coaching experience.

Sorry dude, Dean can't get Phil this job. He's got him every other paycheck he's ever received.

Lutz's firing is akin to jesus crucifixion. phil is one bad butt. Admit it was a mistake, this was an internet bloggers firing. Try to find some equal to lutz will cost a mil or two.

...and we aren't exactly talking about the Kentucky job here.

What about Larry Eustachy or Stan Heath? Both are fiery coaches and both are what Charlotte needs to get them back into the NCAA tournament. Larry Eustachy brought Iowa State to the elite eight in 2000 and was fired not because losing but from public scandal. Moving from Southern Miss to Charlotte would be a greater opportunity for him. Stan Heath brought Kent State to the elite eight in 2002 and brought Arkansas 2 NCAA tournaments back to back. Moving from football school South Florida to Charlotte would be a step up.

Here are some candidates Dubois and Rose should consider:
1. Larry Eustachy
2. Stan Heath
3. Bobby Knight
4. Bobby Cremins
5. Melvin Watkins
6. Steve Lavin

Whatever coach they are looking for, let's hope they hire a good one.

Phil Ford would be a great choice!

Phil Ford would actually never take this lame head coaching job. He is an assistant coach for an NBA team. He coached as the lead assistant for 9 years at UNC and has now been in the NBA as a lead assistant for 8 years. He has Larry Brown and Michael Jordan as references. This guy is in line for an NBA head coaching gig. Im surprised you people would even mention him. He's a great x's an do's guy and has learned from dean smith and larry brown. He and tyron corbin will be NBA coaches soon.
