Coley edged 49-48 in "dunk off"

The Charlotte 49ers may have had a bad year, but senior forward Charlie Coley nearly ended his as a champion.

Demonstrating the acrobatics that thrilled 49ers fans for two seasons, Coley scored a perfect 50 in the final round of ESPN’s 21st annual college Slam Dunk Contest Thursday night with a slam after taking a pass from Rhode Island’s Jimmy Baron, who was stationed in the stands at the Palace of Auburn Hills (Mich.).

The problem? New Mexico’s Tony Dandridge scored a 50 of his own dunking two basketballs at once, sending the two players into a “dunk off.”

Coley dunked over former Michigan star and dunk contest judge Jalen Rose to earn a controversial 48 in the dunk off. Dandridge used a one-handed windmill slam to edge Coley for the championship with a 49.

Of Coley’s five dunks, two received a 50. Dandridge had three 50s in five dunks.

Furman’s Melissa Liebschwager won the women’s 3-point championship and Jack McClinton of Miami (Fla.) won the men’s 3-point title.

he got robbed but he was the star of the show. i'm sure most sports fans in charlotte would be interested in this story. why is it stuck in a blog?

this is what happens when you let butter fingered football players judge basketball contests.

The other guy couldn't even dunk off the dribble. How is that the champion of anything but traveling?

Can Coley do something besides just jump over stuff? The kid has no acrobatics!

With the entire country watching the 2009 NCAA Dunk Contest, with one of Charlotte's very own in the contest, and nearly winning, the people of Charlotte get to read about it in a blog entry?

It's too bad every story about a Niner athlete is eclipsed by their fans worrying about how the Observer has wronged them and what they could have done to get better coverage.

Who cares about a Charlotte player in a nationally televised dunk contest? I demand to know how Ty Lawson is doing on the craps table!!

Typical Charlotte fan response: "We got ____ but why don't we have ____?" SHUT UP already

anon 10:25 - how can you blame us for getting upset so easily? If this was an ACC lacrosse skills competition - especially if there were Tar Heels involved - this would be at the top of page 1C. And tha is to be expected of a paper that hires 95% UNC grads to staff the sports department. I'll bet Utter is the only non-ACC grad in the entire department. You would never know by reading this paper that the ACC was about the sixh-best hoops conference this year.

Does anyone know what Lawson had for breakfast?
