Peterson: No contact from Charlotte 49ers

Appalachian State coach Buzz Peterson, whose team ended its season Thursday night with a loss to Pacific in the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com tournament, confirmed Saturday he had not been contacted by the Charlotte 49ers regarding their coaching vacancy.

In a brief interview with the Observer on Saturday morning, Peterson declined to answer any specific questions about his interest in the job saying only, "I have had no contact with anyone at UNC Charlotte and I'm extremely happy to be coaching at Appalachian State."

Peterson, 46, is in his second stint as coach of the Mountaineers. ASU finished 24-13 this season and Peterson compiled a 79-39 record in his first tenure as coach. His overall college coaching record is 225-147.

Peterson has also coached at Tennessee, Tulsa, Coastal Carolina and before returning to Appalachian State, he served as director of player personnel for the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats. Peterson and his family continue to live in Charlotte.

Still in the mix as possible 49ers coaches are former Alabama coach Mark Gottfried; former Wyoming and Clemson coach Larry Shyatt, who is now associate head coach at Florida; Kansas assistant and former East Carolina coach Joe Dooley; Xavier associate head coach Pat Kelsey; and former Wake Forest and South Carolina coach Dave Odom.

so does that mean Groce from Ohio isn't in the mix?

Jimmy Fox from Davidson would be a great choice.

None of the names that are alleged to be on the school's list excite me. No name recognition, assistants, no Carolina or northeast connections. Maybe it's time to bring back Lutz. He had a winning record and head coaching experience. That's more than we can say about the names on the list.

You obviously have not done your research. Many of the coaches mentioned have Northeast ties.

If you want 16-14 seasons with the occasional 20 wins bring back Lutz. He has never excited the community as a whole.

Why another UNC loser? Pathetic!

Not a huge fan of any of the names being considered. Charlotte needs to bring in a big name so how about former IU coach and current Bucks assistant Kelvin Sampson if his suspension is up?

Gottfried and Dooley make some sense.

Gottfried had some very good years at Alabama - a school in a power conference, where basketball is an afterthought. He could do even better at a school where hoops will always be the bread & butter.

Dooley has had a few years being a part of an elite program at Kansas.

Just say no to Odom and Shyatt, as they were complete failures at their last jobs.

Of course HE has had no contact. His representatives have probably been in contact even while his team was playing in the "other" tourney.

Of course HE has had no contact. His representatives have probably had the point of all contact. I bet they have an interest in Buzz and he has been in some sort of communique even durig the postseason tourney.

Maybe it's a good sign that the AD is keeping their search out of the papers and thus not botching it in the way that St. John's may have...or maybe it's a bad sign of the irrelevancy of the 49er basketball program nationally (or the undesirability of the job for whatever reasons) that I hear little to no speculation about this job on most of the major sports media outlets, ESPN, etc.
