Add another name to the candidate list for the men's basketball coaching position for the Charlotte 49ers.
Former Wyoming and Clemson coach Larry Shyatt, currently associate head coach at Florida, has joined former Wake Forest and South Carolina coach Dave Odom as a candidate for the 49ers' vacancy, according to a source close to the process.
Shyatt, 58, has worked previously for UNC Charlotte chancellor Dr. Philip Dubois. Shyatt spent one season as coach at Wyoming, going 19-9 and making an NCAA appearance in the 1997-98 season while Dubois was the school's president.
Clemson hired Shyatt after his success at Wyoming. He spent five seasons with the Tigers and compiled a 70-84 record. He moved to the Florida Gators as an assistant in 2004 and was promoted to associate head coach in 2007.
Shyatt's defensive philosophy has been credited in part for the Gators' run to the NCAA championship. His impact on the team was highlighted in this New York Times article.
UPDATE: Odom has also interviewed for the coaching vacancy at UNC Wilmington according to this article at the Wilmington Star News.

From deep within the bunkers of Halton Arena It has been rumored by one bogus person that the next head coach for the Charlotte 49er’s will be Larry Brown head coach of the Charlotte Bobcats. He is an experienced college coach with a winning record, has won a National Championship, and is a recruiting magnet. With the 49ner’s A-10 schedule he will be able to spend half the season in the Philly area where his family dwells. It has been known for some time that he desires to step down from the Bobcat position. Rose & Dubois Oh Shyatt get out of here!
Herb Sendek is set to interview Friday.
So the only 2 known candidates are guys who were miserable failures at their last position? Not sure if this will do us any good.
interesting that true insiders come up with none of these names...the 4 names those in the know keep coming up with are Buzz, Brownell, Wojo, and the Kansas Asst (all under 50)
Odom? Dave Odom? Isn't that slob like 70 now? Come on, he's past it.
Thanks for the update, even if nobody likes the names, at least we have some solid information.
As a Clemson season ticketholder, I watched Shyatt's teams closely for almost 10 years. Shyatt is a good guy and an excellent assistant coach. He is an average recruiter at best. he is an average offensive coach, at best.
If you hired him, his son would be an assistant (he was an assistant for Odom). His son is a grade A douchebag.
I like Charlotte and I pull for them when they aren't playing Clemson and I certainly would be highly disappointed for all their fans if their hired Shyatt or Odom. Neither are an upgrade over Lutz at head coach.
Seems like Judy ought to be looking for a young, energetic, highly motivated assistant coach.
heck, Bill Guthridge is interested
next up: Cremmins and Ellis
The 49ers' fan base continues to show its true colors. Trashing anybody who shows interest in the school's job. Who do you think is coming here? ITS CHARLOTTE and YOU PLAY IN THE A-FRIGGIN-10. Get over yourselves people. If someone like Joe Dooley did want to interview, here you'd rip him because he had a bad record at East Carolina as head coach. I hope all prospective coaches read Niner Nation carefully to see what your getting into here.
anon - Charlotte is calling for a change and don't want the leftovers. Is that wrong? They want YOUNG and on the rise. We want someone who will be here a long time and help build the program to where it was 5 years ago and beyond.
And no, I wouldn't want anything that came out of ECU. We owned them in CUSA, we own them now, and we will continue to own them in the future. They are all about some football, but basketball isn't exactly their centerpiece. Oh, and may I remind you that the a10 was the 6th best league this year. Considering its not BCS thats pretty darn good.
Don't what leftovers? Maybe the administration should have thought of that BEFORE they fired Lutz. Whatever short comings Lutz may have had pale in comparison to the timing of this decision, its search, how candidates are treated and the fact a replacement wasn't known from get-go. Oh and by the way 1st league non-BCS is just FIRST LOSER.
Was the Herb Sendek comment a joke or for real? Im guessing a joke but he is a great coach.
9:21---you know the 6th best league means we finished ahead of 1 BCS league, right? Not to mention we were ranked anywhere from 3-6 as a league thru the season.
What you 49er morons don't understand is that if you do get a young guy on the rise, and he does well, he'll move on to a better job within 3-4 years. That's not the long haul. It's nothing but a pit stop for a guy on the rise. You need to find someone with ties in the area who will want to stay here more than 3-4 years, and reap the rewards of his work.
As far as bashing every candidate who is brought up, who the hell do you guys think you are, freaking Indiana or something? Who exactly do you think you are gonna get?! You guys sure have a high opinion of yourselves despite the fact your program has done very little than be pretty competitive in the late 90's.
Two candidates have been brought up, neither are likely to get looks at any other school, why shouldn't we be unhappy that they are candidates here?
And I believe most people would be happy if we brought in a young coach who did enough in 3-4 years here to earn themselves a higher paying job. That business model has worked pretty well at Xavier. We don't illusions of hiring a 30-something coach who will be here for 30 years and build us into a national power.
The only overwhelming consensus that I've seen from the Niner fan base is that we don't want retreads who were mediocre or worse at previous gigs. That is exactly what Odom and Shyatt are, we HAVE to do better than those two.
I thought we were hiring someone younger than Bobby Lutz. Not two old guys who were never as good as Bobby Lutz.
Why does everyone have this belief that the A-10 is an inferior conference? The A-10 has a team in the Sweet 16, and they are a perennial power: XAVIER. That's the same number of teams in the Sweet 16 as the ACC. And if Xavier made it to the final four, I, for one, would not be surprised. They can light it up. This year the A-10 may well have been the most competitive conference in college basketball. Give some credit where credit is due.
Please get that Shyatt out of here...
Perhaps Shyatt is an AC candidate? I would assume that would come after we have a HC in place, but you know how rumors work.
UNCC should talk to John Groce, HC at Ohio. He just took them to the NCAAs and upset Georgetown. He seems to be a pretty good recruiter, and he was an asst at NCSU for awhile so he knows the Carolinas.
Larry Shyatt, or his agent, is playing this beautifully. With Donovan getting an offer from St. Johns, he'll be high on the list for Florida. This may be a way to make it known that Florida make need to act quickly if he is the guy they want.
Yes the A-10 is an INFERIOR league with a far SUPERIOR team in Xavier OWNING it. Everybody else in it is has-beens. You 49ers fans just don't get it, it doesn't matter if you beat Fordham and St Bonaventure and La Salle by 50 POINTS every year, NOBODY HERE CARES ABOUT THOSE SCHOOLS including recruits !!!!
By your logic, the A-10 is an inferior league, like…The ACC, which is owned by DUKE. You mention the weak sisters in the A-10. You don't mention: Temple, Richmond, GW, U Mass, St. Josephs, and Dayton, all have had excellent teams in the last five years. BTW, there are also weak sisters in the ACC: BCU, Virginia. The A-10 is a very strong conference. Not as strong as the ACC but strong. Also, remember the only reason UNCC is in the A-10 is that the ACC is run by greedy bastards who had to expand, causing a cascade effect that destroyed the very powerful Conference USA and irreparably damaged the Charlotte program. Imagine if we were still playing Cincy, Louisville, DePaul, Marquette, and Memphis. And you wonder why I hate the ACC. Go XAVIER.
No way Jose! He wasn't good in Clemson and he won't be in Charlotte.
All I have to say is, "keep looking". They need to look for an active coach like Larry Eustachy or Stan Heath.
Larry Shyatt. Pass.
How about moving Charlotte to a different conference with a new coach?
CHARLOTTE EYEING TOP ASSISTANTS
Three of the candidates targeted for the Charlotte opening:
1) Kansas assistant and former ECU coach Joe Dooley.
2) Xavier assistant Pat Kelsey, who was at Wake Forest.
3) Texas assistant Russell Springmann.

Utter has NO idea! Shyatt or Odom! Give me a break. They are in no way serious candidates. Believe me. This is just more bad reporting by the worst reporter in college basketball.
There is a rumor Steve Wojciechowski, Associate Head Coach at Duke will be offered the job. Let's hope he takes it.
Tommy Amaker has name recognition, experience, and knowledge of the Carolinas and Virginia. Tommy Amaker has won at 3 schools, 4 counting Duke and restored integrity at MSU. Tommy has recruited in the Southeast and northeast. Education is also very important to Tommy Amaker. Please consider Tommy Amaker for the Charlotte 49ner coach
A-10 & ACC Comparison

Greetings Observer Sports!
I am very interested on this issue because I would like to find out what will happen.
A coach, Since it is the brain of the team, is the main fact for a team in order to success.
clemson96jdh...why is his son a douchebag?....
Great insight on this subject!
