Another Charlotte 49ers coaching update

Late Monday night, Charlotte 49ers officials contacted Xavier associate head coach and former Wake Forest assistant Pat Kelsey about their head coaching position, Kelsey confirmed through a third party on Tuesday.

As recently as Monday afternoon, Kelsey had maintained he had not had contact with anyone from Charlotte.

Before joining head coach Chris Mack's staff at Xavier this season Kelsey spent five seasons as assistant coach at Wake Forest.

The Musketeers finished the season 26-9, winning their fourth straight Atlantic 10 regular season championship and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament before losing in double overtime to Kansas State.

Finally Someone admits to being contacted!!!

There are 3rd party coaching search services out there. They contact the coaches and gauge interest for the inquiring school, so they don't have to ask permission to contact the coach.

If Judy Rose fired Bobby Lutz without knowing who she was going to hire, then she is an idiot and needs to follow Bobby out the door.

For now, I will assume its someone still playing ball, so no announcement until after they finish their games. If not, then we know she has no clue what she is doing.

I played against Pat Kelsey in high school in Cincinnati. He was a tremendous over-achiever and would expect that he gets the best out of his players. He also has numerous connections in the Midwest and Southeast for recruiting. He's young, energetic, and a perfect fit to get the program headed in a new direction.

If they hire a rookie head coach he will have to be a monumental personality because he will be 399 career wins behind the man select fans couldn't get out of here fast enough.

That's just not true Ghoul. You don't have to have THE replacement in your pocket before firing a coach. You have to have a good list with multiple replacements which you very strongly feel you will be able to hire (perhaps with some 3rd party contact, perhaps not).

But it is absurd to think that every school in the country who fires a coach due to performance actually has the replacement lined up before making the fire. Under that assumption, interviews are pointless because the decision has already been made...

I think Kelsey is a good candidate, I'm glad Charlotte is contacting him.

I believe Rose is waiting for Duke to finish up!Wojo. And that might help with recruiting if they win it all or get to the finals. Just saying.I think Rose already has a list of names & is waiting for the season to be over with.

399 Career wins? How about 218 wins at Charlotte with only 5 20 win seasons in 12 years. But never let the facts get in your way.

Anonymous said...

What means more? A 20-win season or a trip to the NCAA tournament. That's what I thought - you moron.

When was the last time Charlotte University was in the NCAA? Better yet, when was the last time they made it out of the first round. You CANNOT put 6 players on the court in a crucial situation. Bobby was a nice guy. He was no longer a good fit for this program.

Anonymous said...

Lutz seemed to get the players and get them in school. They just never seemed to be in better shape than their opponent. They never seemed to be confident and cohesive on the court. And, they often seemed unmotivated to perform. Up....and......down.....and.....up.

This either means you are extracting the most out of talent and they have let-downs. Or, the kids just played well when the situation called for it. Either way, I think there was some serious issues in the Charlotte coaching position in the past. And, letting six men go out on the floor in a crucial point in a game. Well, you head is just not in the game.

Wojo is my first choice to create a smart, hustling, disciplined ball team. I do like the sound of Kelsey...that Xavier team never, never let up. They just got a couple of bad breaks at the end against K State and lost. They showed as much heart in that game as any team in the tournament. If he can get that kind of effort and will to win....well, you'd see some folks in the stands.

49ers need to check out Head Coach Matt Ridge of Davidson County Community College. There BBall program is only 3 years old, but his Team DCCC Storm has but up some pretty impressive numbers. They were 29-4 this year. http://www.davidsonccc.edu/athletics/newsreleases/bbaccomplishments0809.pdf

Ghoul I agree with your view about the administration of the Charlotte 49ers. I also agree with the person that said every school does not have a replacement in mind when they fire a coach. However, successful, effective, and relevant schools do have a game plan and person or persons in mind before they terminate a coach. Think small, be small

UNCC - Uh Nother Community College

Anonymous said...

Right, but there is a difference between having a gameplan and having THE replacement in your pocket when you fire a coach. I would argue that it is very rare that schools have THE replacement lined up.

There definitely needs to be a list of names and some research into the possibility of landing the names on the list, but saying you have to have the successor lined up is going a bit far.

I think Rose is handling this search very well, the AD isn't talking at all, so we don't have a list a half dozen long of coaches who have rejected offers (see St. John's, UNCW...).

Whether or not they make the right hire remains to be seen, but I think the search has been done very well up to this point, quietly contact the names on the list and come to a decision AFTER talking to MULTIPLE candidates, don't announce anything until you are introducing your new coach.

"UNCC - Uh Nother Community College"

That's so clever! You implied that "UNCC" is an acronym for a community college! Hilarious! And to top it all off, you used two fake words!

Do you have any more of these up your sleeve? I'm rolling on the floor here!

No more UNC-CH loser coaches! Pathetic!

UNCC - URA No Coach College

For all practical purposes you are a community college, with a community college administration, a community college inferiority complex, and a community college vision. You should change your name from the 49ners to the Whales, because your pride is lower than whale waste. You will never be able to hire an experienced head coach with a successful record from another school, because you have no pride. UNsuCCessful!

Anonymous said...

"UNsuCCessful"...man, the prospects of Charlotte hiring an exciting young coach really bring out the trolls around here.

Anonymous said...

To the anonymous reader who was calling UNC Charlotte a community college, ummm...you misspelled 49ers. Wow. Bless your heart.

Anonymous said...

haha the people talking about how bad the university of north carolina at charlotte (for those of you that cant get it right) is, you are probably the ones who can't get in. If you actually pay attention, you will find out it's a good school. So just talk about something you know, say CPCC!

Anonymous said...

I could never figure out why Charlotte has two community colleges to begin with (UNCC & CPCC). However, there is nothing wrong with being a community college. And there are a lot of assistant coaches that would love to have a coaching position at a community college

Man, you clowns keep coming out of the woodwork to click on a Charlotte 49er blog to talk smack, don't you have anything better to do?

Anonymous said...

silly 9ers, experienced head coaches are for four year schools.

Tar heels forever!

Its amazing what trash you can read from both sides of this forum regarding UNCC. UNCC thinking they can keep up with schools like UNC in sports and academics.

From what I'm also reading it seems that there are probably some ECU, and App State fans on this blog. Most people from those two particular schools suffer an inferiority complex, mostly the App fans, but hey that's what happens when your stuck going to the bottom of the league safety school.

Charlotte is a mid major program, always has been always will be. App state fans and ECU fans on here should also know that there favorite schools are also even lower on the totem poles than Charlotte so they shouldn't be talking. Especially App state who's Socon football program is a joke and who's other programs, athletically and academically, are worse off then there football program. There is a reason why Buzz Peterson is at App State and why he wants to leave for other programs, they both suck, but they both both know can't do any better.
UNC may have made a crappy head with Buzz, but at least hes good enough for App, your welcome.
Your teams are horrible. You guys will never be UNC. UNCC will always be second rate to us, ECU will be a bottom CUSA team, and App State will always be the dead end for sports and sports players alike period.

thanks for reading.

If Mike Hopkins actually leaves for Charlotte that would be huge! I mean it has been mentioned that he is the next Coach for Syracuse when JB steps down. Getting Hopkins would be the closest thing for Charlotte to stealing a head coach at a BCS conference. I doubt it will happen but if it did it would b a huge step in the right direction.

What the UNC idiots* don't realize is that UNCC isn't trying to become UNC. UNCC fans don't have illusions about competing for national championships on a yearly basis. They want to compete for NCAA bids the way they did 10 years ago, and hope that the chips fall in the right place once in a blue moon and they make a run past the sweet 16. There is nothing wrong with this goal, it is entirely reasonable given the facilities, size, history, location and money available for Charlotte basketball. Most teams in the country would love to have Charlotte's basketball success from the past decade (even with the 5 disappointing years). UNC isn't one of those teams, we all know that, it was a dead horse a decade ago, I don't even have an appropriate metaphor for it at this point.

If you talk to Charlotte fans, none of them will bring up UNC as a measuring stick for Charlotte's success, it is only those same UNC idiots* who are making this argument...so, who exactly are you arguing with?

*By "idiots" I mean the 98% of their fanbase who didn't attend the university, I've found that the vast majority of those who did attend UNC are very reasonable people who aren't nearly petty enough to troll blogs dedicated to other schools to talk trash.

Anonymous said...

ECU and App are not lower than UNCC. UNCC is slightly below them. And if somebody can't get into UNCC, I'm assuming it's because they don't have a GED.

Anonymous said...

Yes, we get it. UNCC is a collection of 25,000 high school dropouts, we get it. Move along.

Anonymous said...

Would someone tell Judy Rose if Charlotte is to be a big time program then they need a big time coach! Why did they not pursue Lavin or Tubby Smith? Maybe it is time for Judy to find a new job.

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't say it's a collection of high school dropouts. In fact, I dare say that 15,000 of the students are there for their second degree. Associates degrees only take one so far! Hey, it could be worse, you could be UNC-Pembroke.

Don't worry UNCC Barney Rose has everything under control in Mayberry

11:20 pm

I am an ECU grad and proud of it, Go Pirates! I know for a fact that ECU can match up with UNCC anytime of the day. The only thing I will have to agree with however would be the comment about App State, they are an overrated community college. Heck there Alumni cant even say there schools name right LOL. As for the names of the potential coaches named so far a couple seem to be good contenders for the job. They may not be top head coaches but they certainly seem to be better than retreads like Buzz Peterson. Maybe if you get the right coach and a football program you can rejoin at a CUSA.

Hey ! Hey! I've got it. If assistants are the answer, Let's get an assistant to the assistant with assistant experience. Then maybe we go to the NIT.

Anonymous said...

If they fire a coach that has just as good a record as Phil Martelli has the last 12 years at St. Joes and went to one more NCAA tournament in those 12 years as Martelli and they are going to settle for people that have never called a timeout, than the fans that wanted Lutz gone will get what they deserve. Judy made a big deal of them losing games at the end of the season. Would it been better if they ahd lost the games early in the year and then won 7 out of 8 to still finish 19-12. Lutz had 7 out of his top 8 back next season. She fired him so the new coach would have a good team waiting for him. No matter how you look at it, Lutz deserved better than this. People at St. Joes want to build a statue of Martelli and UNCC fires Lutz. Go figure.

Anonymous said...

Could it be Judy Rose is a misandrist that destroyed the morale of the men’s basketball program. Lutz name was just too big her and football is a men’s thing. She publicly tried to undermine and terminate Lutz for the last 5 years and held out against football as long as she could. This is her opportunity to get even with every man in Charlotte that forced her to do, what she detested doing

Anonymous said...

Judy and Lutz did not have the best relationship over the past few years. I know this for a fact. There were a lot of "inside" issues that never got published that Judy was not happy about. She was looking for an opportunity to get rid of Bobby and she did it. She was pressured into giving him an extention after he made the trip to South Alabama a few years ago. If you actually peal back the onion you will see that Bobby has actually had a hard time with players in the past 12 years. There were more players who transferred out of Charlotte in the past 12 years than any other team in the country. This started his first year with Kenny Whitehead and Jonathan Nealy, to Tory Reed, and the list goes on. Bobby is a great X and O coach, but not a great communicator. The staff were known to over sell recruits and under deliver. That's why so many folks transfer. Personally I think we should hire Todd Bozeman at Morehead State. Yes he paid Jason Kidd at Cal 15 years ago, so what? If you think $100 handshakes are a thing of the past think again.
