49ers men qualify for A-10 tournament

George Washington, by virtue of its 77-62 loss at Massachusetts on Wednesday night, assured the Charlotte 49ers would participate in next week's A-10 conference tournament in Atlantic City, N.J. George Washington and Fordham will be the two A-10 teams (of 14) that will not participate in the conference tournament this season.

Charlotte (11-18, 5-10) has one game remaining, Saturday at St. Bonaventure. Based on the 49ers' performance in that game, Charlotte can enter the tournament next week anywhere from a 10th to 12th seed. In any case, they will open play in the tournament next Wednesday.

This season just won't end soon enough.

UNCC athletics are a joke.

Football? too little too late.

Even if you think they are a joke, they are obviously revelant enough for you to be reading about them. Most likely another wal-mart ACC fan.

We read about them for the humor. This is REALLY funny. It should be embarrasing for any alum.

The problem starts with the AD. As long as Jennifer Roberts runs the program you will be laughed at.

Just win the first game!

Who is Jennifer Roberts?

Charlotte athletics are a joke? You're kidding. The basketball team has a couple of down years, and the entire department is a joke? What have you been smoking? Every other sport in Charlotte athletics is winning conference championships.

Sure, this basketball season has been very difficult to endure. It has been full of terrible losses and incredible victories. It's a shame that this group of guys wasn't able to build a respectable record. As a proud alum and season ticket holder, I am ready to get this season over with...

So Judy Rose is Jennifer Roberts? Who knew? -- Mark

UNCC made the tournament on the backs of another's school's loss.
What a crying shame!! This basketball program is in the dumps and needs some revamping. I agree that it's time for BOTH Rose and Lutz to go......time to restore the track to success......football can wait....

The problem with Lutz is he can't seem to recruit. Charlotte hasn't had a decent big man in years.

Ha, recruiting is the least of the coaching staff's problems. Curtis Withers, Martin Iti, Phil Jones were all very highly rated big men coming out of high school. Coley is an athletic freak of a big man that a lot of big time programs would love to have.

Chris Braswell is next in line, coming in next year, Tom Creen at Indiana was begging him to not commit in the fall so he could free up a scholarship for him, but he signed with the Niners instead. Also, Sherrill has played amazing basketball his senior year, two solid big freshmen next year.

Recruiting big men isn't the problem, it's 1) getting the deadly shooter Lutz can't win games without and 2) getting the big men to play a disciplined inside game.

If Bowden can be a consistent 3 point threat and Braswell actually stays in the paint and rebounds, we could easily go from 20 losses to 20 wins next season (assuming we find a capable backup PG and don't lose key players to injury...).

So much hate and so few targets.
Obviously none of you haters are Cubs fans either.

I would like to see you haters recruit against the ACC & SEC schools and field a competive team every year.

Fortunately for Lutz and company they don't throw you to the wolves when you have a down year. The adminstration recognizes his student athletes graduate and we're not reading about their latest DUI's or Assults in the daily rags.

Congrats to the student atheletes who've played hard and deserve every win.

In my opinion, the problem has been a combination of Lutz not being able to adjust his coaching to the talents of the players he does get, and have players that just don't get it ! If he can't win next season with Spears, Braswell, Sherrill and Bowden adding to the mix....he's should be done !!! No questions asked !

And when he does win, you who don't like him will still WHINE. YAWN

Wow, imagine that! Good luck to the one and done 49ers who will probably lose by 20 points.

If you dont like the 49ers then why waste your time writing negative remarks. We have a great golf team, baseball team, soccer team, and track team. The moron that said 49ers athletics is probably mad cuz he didnt make the towl boy team. Our basketball team is just having a tough year. Last year was awsome and looking forward to next year.

An NIT bid is not awesome...we haven't had a good season in 4 years. Fans thinking NIT bids are a good thing is a real sign of how far the program has fallen.

NCAA or bust next year!

edging our way into the conference tournament is nothing to brag abot. our men's basketball program has really tanked, but i don't think that's the only problem. it seems way too much emphasis and favortism has been put on women's athletics in recent years.

How is the 49ers golf team this year? I know they have finished in the top 5 in the NCAA Championships the past 3 years but the Observer never prints anything on them. It seems the Observer is more complacent printing articles on teams of lesser abilities that happen to be located in the Triad. That makes no sense because they have no subscribers in the Triad.

I look forward to the A-10 reporting from the Observer, but they never have the standings right and half of their comments are wrong. Jim says Fordham and GW are out! Not right, if GW wins and Bonnies lose, GW is in.
Way to be on top of that Jim!
