The Atlantic 10 women's tournament has its first upset. No. 12 seed Rhode Island, which won two conference games in the regular season, upset fifth seed George Washington 62-58 Friday at Halton Arena.
The Rams (10-20) had lost nine straight games entering the tournament but made four straight free throws in the final 23.7 seconds to ice the victory. Rhode Island will play fourth seed Richmond (21-8) at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the tournament quarterfinals.
Crystal Bellinger and Lindsay Harris both scored 15 points to lead the Rams. Jessica Adair had 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Colonials (17-13).
